When I collect one of the boxes of dried herbs from my herb store I know a lot of things about it. I know where the herb was growing and how vibrant the plants were. I know the weather on the day that it was harvested, the time of day and what my thought processes were at that moment. I know how quickly the herb was transported to my clinic for processing. I know that it was kept whole and that it was laid out in a single layer straight away. I know what temperature it was dried at and that it was dried thoroughly. I know that it was placed into storage carefully and that in storage it has been protected from exposure to light. I know all these things about each of my herbs and in knowing them I know that the herbs are the best possible quality that they could be. This is because each one of the things that I have listed has a significant impact on the final quality of the herb. When we reach for a herb to make a medicine we’re not just reaching for a standard ‘package’ of a particular herb. Herbs are living and variable. How they’re treated and handled makes a huge difference to their potency, efficacy and how long they keep. Each herb has its own special requirements too. I’m writing in detail about all of these factors in my book. Soon my words will be with @aeonbooks_herbal and they will begin the process of crafting them into a published work.
