Oh, the deep purples ... “Whether landscape, interior, still life, or figure, there is a strong ethical feeling about Diebenkorn’s work,” wrote Alfred Frankenstein for the @SFChronicle in 1963. “He is neither decorator nor entertainer, but his color is warming up, his paint textures are growing more varied and complex, a kind of austere richness glows everywhere, and the bleak, lightless blue that used to suffuse his canvases like a disinfectant is altogether gone. Most important, it seems to me, are the big, restrainedly powerful pictures like ‘Ingleside,’ ‘Street,’ ‘Bridge,’ and ‘Round Table.’”

Purples and greens along with a steel gray blue dominate the artist’s color palette in the street scene pictured here. Street was gifted to the Oakland Museum of California in 1984 by art collector Howard E. Johnson. In addition to this oil painting, Johnson donated other important works from the artist’s various painting periods, including an early Abstract Expressionist work, a Berkeley abstract painting, and two early figurative works. The gift gave the Oakland Museum “the most complete survey of Diebenkorn’s work of any museum in the country” at the time.
