La stessa parola "camposanto" in lingua italiana deriva da questo posto perchè i Pisani durante la terza crociata dal loro combattuta nel XII secolo riempì l'interno con terra portata dal Monte Calvario di Gerusalemme quindi letteralmente Campo-Santo.
