We want to take a minute during Snowy Owl Week to honor someone who is very special to ORI and to the Snowy Owl Project - Photographer Daniel J. Cox. Snowy Owl Week (while far from over) has been an opportunity to share information about Snowy Owls, our work, and tell a story of nesting on the tundra through beautiful and moving images. Many of the images we have shared are the work of Daniel J. Cox. Other than our own researchers, no one has clocked more hours on the Snowy Owl Breeding and Ecology Study than Dan. He’s spent countless hours in the field with ORI, creating a body of work that chronicles our research through time, documents important findings, and has been instrumental in generating interest around Snowy Owl conservation. His iconic Snowy Owl photos are some of the most enduring in the world. Dan shot all the photos for the 2002 National Geographic cover story on Snowy Owls and ORI. His photo-essay accompanied the beautiful writings of Mary Lynne Warren, another great friend to our team, who wrote about the predator to prey relationship between Snowies and lemmings. And just last week, as we were getting ready to launch Snowy Owl Week and our fundraiser, Dan got in touch about some video he had taken from the project. He wondered if we were still interested in putting together a clip that could help us out. It was late, there was a lot to do still – so we said – ya, that sounds great, but let’s shoot for next year’s Snowy Owl Week. There just wasn’t time. Within two days Dan emailed us a link to a video that he had put together. Unsolicited and unpaid – and amid his incredibly busy schedule – he put together a video. That’s just who Dan is. Dan, you’re the man. We are so grateful for your friendship, your work, talent, and for being who you are. Your contributions to ORI and the Snowy Owl Project are too numerous to list and priceless.
