Here’s an old feeding video of my adult female Giant Shield Mantis (Rhombodera megaera) feeding on a Superworm (Zophobas morio). Take a look at the sheer size of her! If you missed the first post about this beautiful mantis species, the post about her was on March 25, 2019. Not really much to say about this post, so just enjoy it lol! #Jesus #God #giantshieldmantis #rhombodera #prayingmantis #mantis #mantodea #entomology #insect #insects #insectsofinstagram #bug #bugs #bugsofinstagram #spidersofinstagram #arachnid #arachnids #arachnidsofinstagram #green #predator #love #beautiful #art #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #animals #animalsofinstagram #nature #naturephotography

We’ve talked about Old World tarantulas — so now, let’s talk about New World tarantulas! New World tarantulas are native to the Western Hemisphere (namely North and South America). Unlike their Old World counterparts, New World tarantulas are typically far more docile and less likely to become defensive. For the species that have skittish tendencies, they are unlikely to bite in defense; instead, these species rely on urticating hairs as a first line of defense — something that the Old World tarantulas lack entirely. Urticating hairs are harpoon-like, barbed bristles that are loosely attached to the tarantula’s abdomen. In some species (such as my G. pulchripes pictured above), they are noticeably different from the surrounding hair and can be seen at a distance. These hairs are easily kicked off the abdomen by the hind legs and used as a defensive measure against predators. Should the hairs embed themselves in the skin, eyes or respiratory track, they can cause serious health issues. In the skin, they cause mild and persistent itching...but in the eyes and lungs, they can sometimes require a visit to the hospital to have them removed. Not every New World tarantula kicks their hairs; Avicularia, Pachistopelma, and Iridopelma rub their hairs directly into the target instead. Ephebopus doesn’t even have the hairs on their abdomen — instead, they’re located on their pedipalps! Even stranger, Psalmopoeus and Tapinauchenius lack them entirely. The tarantulas featured in my post are both New World species (G. pulchripes and B. hamorii) and are great for beginners in the tarantula hobby. Overall, New World tarantulas are far better suited for beginners due to their calm disposition, reluctancy to become defensive and mild venom (equivalent to a bee’s sting). Stick around for my next post about purchasing your own tarantula!

Living in a community with great local nurseries is awesome! I’m fortunate to find nearly everything I need from plants to ladybugs, with the added value of knowing that I’m supporting a local business. I always recommend checking your local nursery or any local businesses before shopping online, but sometimes that’s the only option. There are a few garden supplies we can only find online, and for those who don’t have access to a local nursery, online shopping might be your best options. For those of you having trouble finding what you need at a local store or nursery, I’ve added a link in my bio with a few lists of items that we use. Let me know if you ever have any questions about what we’re using and I’ll be happy to share.
