The magnificent mosaic interior of the Florence Baptistery’s octagonal dome. The baptistery is the oldest building still standing in the city, having been built between 1059 and 1128. . Work on the vast mosaic started in 1225, under the supervision of a monk named Jacobus. Having trained in Venice, he was heavily influenced by the prevailing Byzantine style of the period. Various scenes are depicted, but The Last Judgement dominates, with Jesus blessing the souls to his right with eternal life, and condemning those to his left to the horrors of hell. It was beneath this striking imagery than an infant Dente Alighieri was baptised in the late 13th Century. . This is the vault of the chapel of Saint Zeno in the Basilica of Santa Prassede in #rome (they're @santaprassede on Instagram!). ⁣ Four angels support the image of Christ Pantocrator (from the Greek, ‘all powerful’). Although Rome had a #mosaic tradition in ancient times, the handiwork was carried out by artisans from #Ravenna, working with locals, as the tradition had almost died out by the time this church was decorated under the patronage of Pope Paschal I.⁣ If you visit, do chat with Luca, the very knowledgeable gentleman in the church's small bookshop. A closer look at Pisa Cathedral’s apse, in particular the wonderful mosaic depicting Christ enthroned between the Virgin Mary and St. John, which adorns the semi-dome. The cathedral suffered a great fire in 1595, but fortunately this mosaic and many of the noteworthy frescos escaped destruction. . The work was started in 1301 by Cimabue, who is celebrated for achieving much more-advanced lifelike proportions and shading than other artists of his time. He is said to have been the tutor of Giotto, the first great artist of the Italian Proto-Renaissance. However, he only completed the image of St. John before his death in 1302, and the rest of the mosaic was not completed until 1320. The Church of the Transfiguration in Kovalyovo, near Novgorod in Russia. Kovalyovo church was first built as part of a monastic complex in the middle of the fourteenth century. Around 1380, the interior was decorated with a series of Byzantinising frescoes thought to be the work of a Serbian atelier. The church was virtually destroyed in the Second World War and was reconstructed in the 1970s. This golden jug was unearthed in Nagyszentmiklósis (modern-day Sânnicolau Mare, in Romania) in 1799 and is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The hoard comprised twenty-three golden vessels in total, together weighing almost 10kg. The different pieces have been dated between the sixth and the ninth centuries AD, and exhibit stylistic and iconographic features of Byzantine, Persian-Sassanide, and Central Asian art. Many are inscribed with Greek and runiform letters. This image shows a warrior on horseback dragging a prisoner along by his hair. The severed head of another foe hangs from the warrior's saddle. Recent scholarship has linked the hoard to the Avars, a nomadic people whose Balkan conquests enabled them to amass large amounts of treasure as tribute from the Byzantine Empire.
