Örtofta Castle outside Eslöv in Skåne is indeed one of the oldest estates in Sweden. It does not show up in the normal lists since it falls in between a Danish and a Swedish castle and it has not been a royal castle. It became Swedish after the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. Usually Örtofta is just mentioned as one of the oldest castles in Skåne, known since the 1000s and during Medieval times one of the most prominent estates in the region. ⁣ ⁣ It is unclear who actually established a seat at Örtofta and the first known owner that available sources can prove today was Turgot Has who lived at Örtofta during the 1380s. His son, Trued, took over the ownership. He was a Knight and in 1412 he became the Bailiff of Gotland where he extended Visborg Castle. He stayed on the island of Gotland until his death in 1437 which means he probably did not spend much time at Örtofta. ⁣ ⁣ In 1632 (the famous year) Henrik Ramel bought Örtofta and he was also the owner of Bäckaskog’s estate. He built what we today believe is the first part of the castle. When Christian Barnekow became the sole owner in 1727 he commissioned extensive works of the main building which is still visible today through the inscriptions above the main entrance. He did not use the castle much since he mostly stayed in Kristianstad and the castle Vittskövle and when he died in 1762 Örtofta was inherited by his daughter Margareta and her husband the Baron Carl Filip Sack. ⁣ ⁣ It was not until the years 1857-1861 that the castle received its current look when the wings and tower were erected by Danish architect Ferdinand Meldahl. Burg Eltz has been in the same family for 1000 years -- that's 33 generations of the same family! The castle has a great setting in the hills and it's a lovely 15 minute walk from the car park through the forest listening to the sounds of nature. It has lovely architecture and is well preserved. The tour is offered in German and English, and although a little pricey, it was very informative and you will definitely enjoy it a lot. You will learn about the history and construction of the castle, and you'll glean a little of what their early life there was like. If you have time, hike up from Moselkern (it's about a 45 minute walk, with a moderate elevation). Also be sure to visit the Schatzenkammer (weapons, armor and treasures).
