Children follow example more than they follow instructions. . . You cannot hold your children to something you’re not willing to hold yourself too. . . If you want them to have courage, you need to face your own fears; . If you want them to live with gratitude & joy, you need to find grace in the moments; . If you want them to experience mental & emotional wellness, you need to advocate for your own... . . They are watching you more than you know . . #ResilientLittleHearts

It’s #TherapyTipTuesday! This tip is for helping children progress to transition from tummy time positioning to sitting. This is helpful for children who with developmental delay, low, and high muscle tone, decreased head control to challenge posture, and more. Providing minimal support once performing the activity challenges the general posture and helps the child to react quickly using protective reflexes to balance in sitting.  Allow the child to use the arms as much as possible or assist with the hands placement if needed. Note: the child in this video does not have diagnosis and is used as a model. Please let us know if you have any questions about this tip, and message or comment if you’d like us to make a tip post for you! We’re also happy to provide information about private consultations or TeleTherapy consultations. You can check our website at the link in bio for more details and read reviews on Facebook :)

“When your child encounters racial stress in the form of unfair treatment, direct discrimination (racial slurs, violence), etc., the first thing you need to do is ask them how it made them feel. This is critical in developing what we call “emotional intelligence” in the brain. Think of the brain as having two halves. The left half has logic & words, & the right half has emotions. What I do as a therapist, & what you can do as a parent, is “integrate” the two halves, by helping your child put words (left brain), to emotions (right brain). What this does is lowers the intensity of your child’s experience of emotions, AND helps them know what they are feeling when they feel it. In the case of racial stress, it can help them understand that it was not THEM who is bad. Whenever your child is experiencing emotions related to racial stress, facilitate the biological “integration” process by following these steps. 1. Ask: “How did that make you feel?” Listen fully until they are finished expressing, without trying to change the emotion that THEY are feeling. Your internal experience is not theirs, so leave your emotions out of their space. 2. Validate. “That sounds so hard”, “Mommy/Daddy loves you, & it makes her/him sad to see you hurt” “Is there anything we can do to make this better?” 3. ORGANIZE the experience! “Sometimes people will treat you differently or unfairly because of your race, and that will make you feel different emotions (i.e. maybe sad, mad, hurt, embarrassed). But you must always remember that having these emotions doesn’t make you a bad person, & that it’s impossible for you to be bad for being the race that you are. People that think that race makes someone bad, are wrong.” 4. See if they understand. “What do you think about that?” 5. Reflect for yourself as the parent. How did that go? Did they understand? How did that make ME feel? This won’t look perfect in every situation, but until discrimination stops, it is important to take care of the emotions. By doing this, people of color will avoid internalizing racism & will better understand their emotional lives- which means better behavior, & better mental health.” [Source: Broderick Sawyer]

I have seen the difference it makes when children learn in an environment where they trust those around them. I’ve seen the difference it makes in a child’s behavior when they come into a space where they feel loved and listened to. When children’s needs are met (through feeling heard, loved, and cared for) they feel safe to develop and grow. Because when children trust that you love & listen to them, they feel safe to make mistakes and still feel loved and that’s how we learn, through making mistakes. If we want children to feel safe to learn and develop we need to build environments that foster trust and love. . . . #anurturingvillage #childdevelopment #earlychildhooddevelopment #earlychildhoodeducation #communitylearning #ittakesavillage #earlychildhood #earlychildhoodeducator #developmentallyappropriate #nurturedevelopment #nurturegrowth

Our society underestimates the small, foundational things; & elevates the big moments... . . But it is the seemingly small or insignificant things that have the greatest impact. . . If you can listen to your child, with a heart to understand; you are giving them an invaluable gift. . . Even if you cannot fix their heartache, you are teaching them the comforting presence of love and grace during pain... . . #ResilientLittleHearts
