It was a chilling reminder for me yesterday as a man approached my son right under the noses of the teachers. Luckily he was smart enough not to go with him. He has autism and this guy would have thought he was an easy target. I know that the angels protected him yesterday. I recently was inspired by a post @sitwithwhit wrote about dismissive positivity. As a mother, this is an easy trap to fall into. _________ I still struggle with dismissing my children’s feelings (and not always in a positive way!) As a child, I never believed I could open up. I remember feeling embarrassed and often heard that I was being “overly dramatic” or “over thinking” things. _______ Children are natural communicators. Over time however, they learn to stuff their thoughts + feelings because they see that their caretakers get uncomfortable navigating alongside them. They have no where to turn but IN. _____ It’s not easy seeing your child angry, hurt, or disappointed. And while your intentions may be positive, dismissing them long term causes more harm than good. ______ It’s easy to fall into “default mode” and parent how you were parented. But ask yourself if as a child, you felt heard, seen and accepted? When Mateo was 7 months old and I was 31 weeks pregnant with the twins, my worst nightmare happened- we got into a car accident⚠️ Ironically, I had just been discharged from the hospital for fetal monitoring and we were on our way to buy car seats for the twins. I remember feeling so terrified when I got out of the car and worried that my amniotic sacks had ruptured from impactI worried that I was going to stand up and amniotic fluid was going to come gushing out- but it didn’t. I worried that when we raced to the back seat to check on Mateo that he was going to have a cut or scrape or blood- but he didn’t He was a little shook, but physically he was totally and completely fine. This was the moment I vowed that all our children would forever be in @britaxus car seats. They kept our baby safe from impact and protected him when we couldn’t To say I felt such a deep appreciation for @britaxus and how seriously they take their safety ratings is a understatement! And as if their car seats couldn’t get better, they now have removal covers that you canwash for when thoseaccidents happen! And for those of you wondering how things turned out, we went BACK to the hospital to get checked and luckily, everyone was fine, I just had to be monitored overnight Our van however had to get some serious body work done! We got so lucky. Also a little PSA. If you ever get into a car accident with your child, you MUST buy them a new car seat! Car seats are only made to withstand one impact and even if it looks fine- there may be damage you can’t see!
