As you have probably figured out by now, I am pretty into sustainability and social equity. I really love learning about ethical brands that not only add value to my life, but also are using their position to make society better. One brand I recently learned about was @belkazan, not only do they aim to make their clothes sustainable in certain ways. For instance, I love how considerate they are of the materials they use and their efforts to produce little waste. They also repurpose a lot of their scrap fabric to make children's clothes and household items. They also built and own their own factory in Bali which allows them to oversee all aspects of production. And I appreciate how they personally invested in their staff by paying for and education and providing a living wage, and invest in the community where they have produced for 15 years now. I usually stay away from “us and them” language, as I think that this separation of makers and wearers despite our shared humanity is partially to blame for the large scale poor treatment of garment workers. However, it’s worth noting that our collective decisions about what we buy do, in fact, have a very real impact on the lives of the people making those products. . . Our decision to save up more for an ethically made garment is not usually easy (and I do understand not always possible). But it’s actually pretty powerful to think about how paying a bit more could be the difference of supporting a cooperative that treats workers in a way that enables them to lift themselves and their families up (i.e. supportive working conditions & fair wages/benefits) versus supporting a company that doesn’t even care to check that their factories are following basic health and safety guidelines for workers. . . Yes, first option requires more research; yes, I’m able to buy much much less than before; yes, I have fewer options for where to buy my clothing, but for me the choice is clear. . . Now I’d love to know... what are your thoughts on this?

I had an amazing photoshoot with @mikechaiken yesterday to promote the release of my single. I received so many compliments on my outfit and when people asked where my outfit was from I was so excited to say the thrift store!! Buying second hand not only saves you a ton of money but it also saves the planet! Did you know that the average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing annually! Shopping second hand makes me so happy because I know I am doing something good for mother earth! I feel like I’m on a treasure hunt every time I thrift and when I found this jacket I was like It makes me feel like a rockstar. Learning about sustainable/minimal waste living has inspired me to change the way I shop. When I don’t want an item anymore I donate or sell it so it doesn’t go into the trash!
