Hydration!!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Follows @forefrontathletics for more exercise and nutrition info! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our body contains nearly 60% of water which therefore insufficient of water intake could bring us a lot of problems, such as headaches, reduced sports performance to serious injuries ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When comes to recommendation of the amount of water intake, the version that most of us have heard is 8 x 8oz cups per day However, everyone is different, ranging from external factors such as humidity levels to internal one like body mass and perception to intensity of exercise, which all of these would affect the water intake ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ Hydration Status ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✅ One practical way of monitoring hydration status is to look at urine color. From clear (adequate) to darker colour (drink water please!), as well as the smelling from light to strong could be a good indicator. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ Pre-workout hydration ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✅ If you do your workout : ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⭕️In the afternoon or at night, then 0.08-0.12 oz of fluid per pound of bodyweight 4 hours before exercise(1) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⭕️In the morning, then 0.05-0.08 oz of fluid per pound of bodyweight 2 hours before exercise (1) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So if you weigh 65kg, then about 500ml of water should be adequate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ During workout hydration ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✅ The goal here is to prevent dehydration because of sweat loss. Do not use thirst as an indicator because you are already a little dehydrated by the time you feel thirsty. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If your training session is: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⭕️About 1 hour or less, then plain water is suffice to meet the needs; ⭕️More than 1 hour, then having some sports drinks which have tons of electrolyte would be helpful. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ Post-workout hydration ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✅ Many of us would feel dehydrated after the workout and it is fine, as long as we could consume enough water after that (20-24 oz of fluid per pound of bodyweight lost by weighing pre- and post- exercise sweat loss) (1). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✅ Having a post-workout meal could also contribute to overcoming the sweat loss as all foods have a portion of water inside ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
