R is for Rainbow Brite⠀ 90s TOYpography⠀ @36daysoftype ⠀ Rainbow Brite dolls and a ton of other merchandise all came about as Hallmark’s way to get into the licensing game when they introduced her in 1983. The Rainbow Brite animated television series first aired in 1984, the same year Hallmark licensed Rainbow Brite to Mattel. I had the classic plush doll with yarn hair and matching Starlight. You know you’re jealous. ⠀ ⠀ The whole premise of Rainbow Brite was that she brought color to the world with the help of her magical Color Belt, her friend Twink, her flying horse Starlight, and the Color Kids. And Murky Dismal and Lurky, were always trying to steal Rainbow’s belt and destroy all colors to no avail. ⠀ ⠀ Here are a few facts I didn’t know:⠀ ⠀ -Rainbow Brite’s real name was Wisp. Her name only changed to Rainbow Brite in the cartoon series’ second episode after she defeated the Dark One and became the keeper of the Color Belt.⠀ ⠀ -According to the books, Twink was a red sprite until Murky threw him into The Pits, which drained him of his colors. ⠀ ⠀ -Six years old at the time, actress Bettina Bush provided the voice of Rainbow Brite AND My Little Pony.⠀ ⠀ -Rainbow Brite was super popular in Germany where her name was Regina Regenbogen.⠀ ⠀ @36daysoftype #36days_r #36daysoftype06 #36daysoftype #90stoypography #rainbowbrite #36days_Adobe #contest⠀ ⠀ #3dtype #typography #3dillustration #cinema4d #36daysoftype_adobe #retrostyle #90s #retro #oldschool #90skid #90skids #1990s #nostalgia #90svintage #90snostalgia #childhoodtoys #toy #toys #toycollector #vintagetoys #blastfromthepast #rememberthis #80s

U is for Uno⠀ 90s TOYpography⠀ @36daysoftype⠀ ⠀ I love me some Uno. I especially love holding a grudge over anyone who uses skip or reverse card against me. ⠀ ⠀ After having an argument with his son about Crazy 8's, Merle Robbins, a barbershop owner and card lover, invented UNO in 1971 in Reading, Ohio. He introduced the game to his family, and after they started playing the game more and more he decided to have the game printed.⠀ ⠀ His family pooled together $8,000 to have 5,000 games made, which they produced on their dining room table. Merle sold UNO from his barbershop at first. A few friends and local businesses sold them too. After the game got really popular, Merle sold the rights to a funeral parlor owner in Joliet, Illinois for $50,000 plus royalties of 10 cents per game. International Games Inc. was formed to market UNO, and sales skyrocketed. In 1992, International Games became part of the Mattel family, and UNO had a new home.⠀ ⠀ #36days_u #uno #36daysoftype06 #36daysoftype #90stoypography #36days_Adobe #contest ⠀ ⠀ #3dtype #typography #lettering #3dillustration #cinema4d #36daysoftype_adobe #retrogaming #90s #retro #oldschool #90skid #1990s #nostalgia #childhoodgames #toys #toycollector #boardgames #cardgames #unogame #cards #blastfromthepast #rememberthis

C is for "Connect Four"⠀ 90s TOYpography⠀ ⠀ Connect Four (also known as Captain's Mistress, Four Up, Plot Four, Find Four, Four in a Row, Four in a Line, Drop Four, and Gravitrips (in the Soviet Union). The objective of the game is to be the first to form a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line of four of one's own discs. The true origin is unknown but the game as we know it Connect Four was first sold under the Connect Four trademark[3] by Milton Bradley in February 1974. ⠀ ⠀ There is a way to have a guaranteed win. A is for “Ants in the Pants”⠀ 90s TOYpography ⠀ It’s time to dig out your best pair of JNCOs, put your crystal Pepsi on ice, and join me on a trip down memory lane. This year's @36DaysofType is all about your favorite childhood toys from the 90s. "90s Toypography" is going to make you nostalgic for a time when Blockbuster was alive, Sun-In was all the rage, and hacky sack was cool. Although I am still game for a hack circle anytime.⠀ ⠀ Ants in the Pants is a children's tabletop game that was originally invented in 1969 by William H. Schaper, but it made a resurgence in 1986 when Milton Bradley eventually acquired it. ⠀ ⠀ The object of the game for 2-4 players is to spring as many of your 'ants' as possible into the 'pants'. When the tail is pressed and released, the plastic ants spring into the air. I was very frustrated that I never found my ant-springing groove, and couldn't aim with those suckers. I guess that's the point though.⠀ ⠀ #36days_a #36daysoftype06 #36daysoftype #90stoypography #antsinthepants #36days_Adobe #contest⠀ ⠀ #3dtype #typography #36daysoftype_adobe #nintendo #retrogaming #classic #retrostyle #90s #80s #retro #oldschool #90skid #90skids #1990s #nostalgia #90svintage #90snostalgia #childhoodtoys #toy #toys #toycollector #boardgames #36daysoftype_a

It’s time to put down your gel pens and pick up your Etch a Sketch. The Etch a Sketch came from France in 1960 and was originally marketed as the “Télécran", but was later called the “L’Ecran Magique,” or Magic Screen. It was eventually renamed the Etch A Sketch by the Ohio Art Company. It originally had a joystick but evolved to 2 knobs over time.⠀ ⠀ The Etch a Sketch was rejected by Ohio Art and many toy companies at first. Now it has been sold over 100 million times, and has been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, along with silly putty and the slinky. Those other toy companies are probably kicking themselves. ⠀ ⠀ I loved my Etch a Sketch. The limitations it put on me were a fun challenge. Not much has changed. Limitations still produce real creativity.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #36days_e #36daysoftype06 #36daysoftype #90stoypography #etchasketch #drawing #36days_Adobe #contest⠀ ⠀ #firstsketch #3dtype #typography #lettering #cute #arttoy #3dillustration #cinema4d #36daysoftype_adobe #retrogaming #90s #retro #oldschool #90skid #1990s #nostalgia #90snostalgia #childhoodtoys #toy #toys #toycollector #boardgames

K is for Koosh Ball⠀ 90s TOYpography⠀ ⠀ The Koosh Ball, the crazy looking ball once described as a "cross between a porcupine and a bowl of Jell-O,” is made of of more than 2000 rubber filaments. Scott Stillinger was inspired to invent the Koosh in 1986 when he was having trouble teaching his two young kids how to play catch.⠀ ⠀ Stillinger showed a prototype of the ball made of rubber bands to his brother-in-law, Mark Button, who’d worked in marketing at Mattel. The men—and their wives—were confident enough in the product to quit their jobs and start a toy company called OddzOn Products. Stillinger built the machine that would make the balls and operated it out of a barn near his house.⠀ ⠀ The media made fun of the Koosh at first, thinking it would flop. But in the end, those reactions didn’t matter much. The Koosh ball hit shelves in 1987, and by 1988, the ball was a Christmastime bestseller. The next year, it was in 14,000 toy stores across the country and available in 20 countries around the world. ⠀ ⠀ I loved Koosh for being the inside-the-house playing ball, even though my parents didn’t know this. I loved them for juggling, playing indoor basketball, and for lots of complicated games my brothers and I concocted with totally arbitrary rules. ⠀ ⠀ @36daysoftype #36days_k #36daysoftype06 #36daysoftype #90stoypography #koosh #hasbro #36days_Adobe #contest⠀ ⠀ #3dtype #typography #3dillustration #cinema4d #36daysoftype_adobe #retrogaming #vintage #90s #retro #oldschool #90skid #90skids #1990s #nostalgia #90svintage #90snostalgia #childhoodtoys #toy #toys #toycollector #boardgames #memorylane

F is for Furby⠀ 90s TOYpography⠀ ⠀ The terrifyingly cute, colorful, nonsense-garbling creature named Furby was originally called Furball. Invented by David Hampton, Caleb Chung, and Richard C. Levy, the toy became the “It” toy of the era after it debuted at FAO Schwarts in 1998.⠀ ⠀ The Furby was in part inspired by an earlier 90s era electronic pet called the Tamagotchi.  In early 1997, Hampton and Chung saw the Tamagotchi in action for the first time at the annual Toy Fair trade show in New York. He and Chung set out to design an electronic companion you could pet. It spoke in a mishmash of the languages Hampton had picked up while he was in the Navy.⠀ ⠀ I have always been terrified of Furbies and its not even because the NSA has been monitoring us through their eyes. They are just plain creepy looking.⠀ ⠀ #36days_f #36daysoftype06 #36daysoftype @36daysoftype #90stoypography #furby #furbies #drawing #36days_Adobe #contest⠀ ⠀ #3dtype #typography #lettering #cute #arttoy #3dillustration #cinema4d #36daysoftype_adobe #retrogaming #90s #retro #oldschool #90skid #1990s #nostalgia #90snostalgia #childhoodtoys #toy #toys #toycollector #boardgames

V is for View-Master⠀ 90s TOYpography⠀ @36daysoftype⠀ ⠀ I still have a vintage View-Master from the 40s on my shelf. I used my View-Master constantly to learn about fairy tales and Disney stories as a kid. ⠀ ⠀ William Gruber, an organ maker from Portland, Oregon, invented the View-Master by using two cameras strapped together to make 3D images. While visiting the Oregon Caves, he met Harold Graves, the president of Sawyer's, Inc. His company specialized in picture post cards. Together, they created the successful company that exists today.⠀ ⠀ In 1939, View-Master was first introduced at the New York World’s Fair. Intended as a souvenir, it was originally marketed through photo shops and stationary stores.⠀ ⠀ During World War II View-Master produced millions of reels for the U.S. Government that aided the military in airplane/ship identification and range estimation. Amid the educational slides, a few risqué pin-up images of Bettie Page found their way into circulation. The military word of mouth was great for advertising.⠀ ⠀ In 1951 View-Master acquired its main competitor, film-strip production company Tru-Vue, and with it the stereo licensing rights to all Disney characters. Graves and Gruber hit the jackpot. View-Master began offering three-dimensional images of the brand new Disneyland amusement park and stills from Disney movies and television programs. Once sales exploded, View-Master offered slide reels of virtually every major kids’ show and motion picture. Many of the now classic TV “cult” shows of the 1960’s were depicted on View-Master reels. Dark Shadows, Lost in Space, The Munsters, Time Tunnel and The Green Hornet are eagerly sought after by collectors.⠀ ⠀ #36days_v #viewmaster #kodak #36daysoftype06 #36daysoftype #90stoypography #36days_Adobe #contest ⠀ ⠀ #3dtype #typography #lettering #3dillustration #cinema4d #36daysoftype_adobe #retrogaming #90s #retro #oldschool #90skid #1990s #nostalgia #childhoodgames #toys #toycollector #photography #nostaligic #disney #blastfromthepast #rememberthis
