This image is a favorite of mine. Clearly I have a lot of favorites, but when you have photographed as many different types of racing, in different eras, it happens! The year is 1971 and Don Garlits is coming back from a near fatal crash at Lions Drag Strip the year before. To eliminate the possibility of that type of crash ever happening again, Don went to work on perfecting the rear-engined dragster. He qualified 9th in the 32 car field at the 1971 NHRA Winternationals and went on to win the race. I captured this image at the finish line in an area where you are no longer allowed to stand. The cone on the cars left is the actual finish line. The feeling today is that at 300mph it is too unsafe to stand in this location. My feeling is, this picture taken at about 200mph was safe?! That 100mph less isn’t going to save your life if you get hit by the car. But, I’ll leave it at, I never lost ANY friends at the race track. We were and still are pretty good at minimizing risk and that’s over a 50 year span of time! For the photographers that read this, I was using about a 200mm lens, which means, at the angle it’s shot, he went wizzing by me pretty good. Let’s just say it put a smile on my face.
