Double tap if you agree that a PhD is possible at any age.

Have you ever met a person with OCPD? These are people who hyperfocus on tiny details to the exclusion of the panoramic picture. They can not see the forest for the leaves on the trees. Case in point: over Spring Break, my daughter threw herself into her European fair project. She spent hours creating a personalized glossy brochure, a trifold board, and learning everything she could about this country. She was also required to bring a food to represent Belgium, so she chose Belgian waffles. (Shocker!) I personally helped her make and serve 100 fresh waffles at the event. One of the requirements of the assignment was for her to print out the recipe, which she did with enthusiasm. I personally helped her cook 100+ waffles, which we delivered to the school, warm in a slow cooker (which I purchased for the occasion). She wanted all the details RIGHT, so we included waffle toppings. Yesterday, she got her grade back. I was curious to see what her teacher could have possibly found wrong with her assignment and was mildly amused by this feedback. He deducted 4 points from her grade for not listing the instructions on how to MAKE the waffles. She listed the ingredients but did not write the instructions for cooking the waffles. In the waffle maker. Did you know that if you mix waffle ingredient together and throw it in a waffle maker, it makes a waffle? People who get trapped in tiny details, always looking for the negative specifics, are not ideal teachers or good mentors. The great effort taken to find error and painstakingly write these details in tiny spaces here scream OCPD. Where are the points for effort, genuine enthusiasm for learning, and time spent dedicated to the project? Kids deserve to have positive rapport with teachers who encourage, teach, and actually care. What does this have to do with mental health? Positive thoughts and encouragement increase BDNF. BDNF is basically how we learn new information. Keep the positive encouragement intact at school to help kids learn and consolidate new information. This is super important-I’m not talking about self esteem, I’m speaking to optimal brain chemistry. #School #Students
