Do you love the beach too? Admittedly, I took it for granted that I could just stroll along the beachfront.
These days, I'm so grateful to the Councils who put in paths for me to roll along in my wheelchair.
But last week, I was disappointed to learn that organisers of the BEAUTIFUL and well-known 'Sculptures By The Sea' expo had got some sand in there abelist undies.
In a nutshell (or a seashell), they were furious at local Council for putting access paths where their precious little sculptures would go .
Here's the thing. Those paths and boardwalks are for EVERYONE and they represent far more than simply a place to strut in your latest active wear or somewhere for a dog to relieve itself.
Like all inclusive or universal design, the paths represent independence, freedom, inclusion and even a little dignity. If you think I’m going overboard with the last one, you should see my husband and I try to manoeuvre my wheelchair over a sandy section of ground. There’s nothing smooth and dignified about it .
"The paths also represent BEING SEEN. By that I mean, the Council clearly sees disabled people as EQUAL members of the community who deserve the same access to public places as everyone else."

The attitude of the organisers reeks of abelism, exclusion and privilege, all wrapped up in one sandy sculpture.
At first I felt a bit torn because I love and support the arts in all their glorious forms but I also love and support the disability community. But in the end it was a 'no-brainer' as so which side I would get behind.
It's LITTLE situations like this (especially when repeated) that create a precedence for future decision-makers.
When enough SMALL changes are made, the flow-on effects that positively impact bigger things like government policy and inclusive social attitudes are HUGE.
