Sorry for the low video quality but this is an important topic. Halfway accessibility is NOT ACCESSIBILITY. This was at the entrance/exit of the beach; there was a lovely accessible mat laid across the beach so people with disabilities (or those with strollers) could actually access the beach. However, before the mat began was a sand pit. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely that they put the mat in. But if you're going to make something accessible, make it accessible. #ehlersdanlosawareness #ehlersdanlossyndrome #ehlersdanlos #eds #disability #disabled #accessibility #accesible #accessibilitymatters #wheelchair #ambulatorywheelchairuser #mobility #mobilityaids #medicalzebra #zebra #chronicillness #chronicpain #servicedog #ehlersdanlosservicedog #disabilityawareness

CAPTIONING: what is it and why do we care? . If you’ve seen my Insta stories, you’ve seen that I use a captioning app to live caption my videos. I’ve gotten a lot of questions about them, so let’s talk! . Captions generally display all auditory information (including sounds and music, in the case of the caption that you may have seen on a television). They identify who is speaking, and are displaying in the same language as the audio is spoken in. This is how captions differ from subtitles: subtitles are captions that are in a different language from what is spoken! . Captions can be open (always on, like in the case of my Insta stories) or closed (can be turned on or off by the user, like on TV or Youtube). On social media, you have to use outside apps to be able to caption your videos. I use an app called @clipomatic (for iOS), but there are many different apps available for both Apple and Android, so find which one you like best! Google Slides also recently added a live captioning feature that can be used during presentations! . Most people assume that captions are only really used in the case of hearing impairments, but there’s actually a ton of benefit to everyone: . ⭐️Individuals with hearing impairments or learning disabilities ⭐️ Individuals who speak a language other than is being spoken in the video ⭐️ Individuals who are taking notes ⭐️ Individuals listening in a loud environment ⭐️ Increased comprehension of material (auditory and visual learning) ⭐️ Improving search engine hits! . Captioning is an easy way to make sure that whatever auditory content you have, whether in person presentations or online/social media, is accessible to everyone and can make the most impact. Even if you aren’t able to live caption your content, providing a summary or adding a brief text description to your videos is better than nothing! . Do you like captions? I personally always turn on the captions on my television (the better to hear jokes from “The Office”).

Share this! This is a legitimate resource, and it has great reviews. One of the main reasons people often do not go to therapy is because they don’t have insurance or access to a therapist, or if they do, it is not affordable. Sadly, we live in a culture that makes it seem like getting help for the mental component of health is a luxury and not a necessity. ✨ I’m appreciative that there are services out there that cut out that barrier so that people can seek the help and treatment they need without having fear of financial burden to stop them. Also, don’t forget if you are in America, you can use the website Psychology Today to find a therapist in your network/area. . . . #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #therapy #counseling #blacktherapist #wellness #health #healing #personalgrowth #insurance #healthinsurance #nonprofit #nonprofitorganization #openpathcollective #accessibility #resources #community #lgbt #qpoc #bipoc #itsokaynottobeokay #selfhelp #selflove #yourmentalhealthmatters

This image was created in collaboration with @natashalipman Now I’m going to be completely honest here, I have no experience of using a mobility aid in public spaces. I’m not going to pretend that I do. Regardless of that though, I think I can still say I somewhat understand what it’s like to have to face change in your bodies abilities. And it’s difficult. It’s okay if you’re finding it difficult. Change can be a tricky thing to navigate and it can be confusing. And that’s just how you view it yourself, never mind how other people view it including people you know personally and the general public. The only thing I can somewhat relate to it with, in my personal experience, is my use of a shower chair. It took me weeks to finally use it for the first time and when I did I sat on it and cried for 20 minutes. I was nervous for people to see it in my bathroom, and it felt like a step backward. It felt like a visual representation of my physical decline. That must be about 2 years ago now and I can confidently say that I now have absolutely no issues with using my shower chair. I’m not ashamed of my need for it or that I’m in need of one in my early twenties. But that only came with time, and it was a rough road. I’m not trying to say it’s the same thing, or belittle anyone’s struggles here. I’m simply trying to use my own experiences, along with truly listening to other people’s, in order to become a more informed ally. Access is so important, and it shouldn’t be solely up to the people that need it to fight for it. So I’m fighting for it with you. You’re not fighting for it alone. If you’re struggling with the idea of needing a mobility aid or a different type of mobility aid - I hope you know every one of your feelings about it is valid. I truly believe that. 75/100 #The100DayProject Image description - a mustard background with white handwritten text that reads ‘it’s okay to be conflicted about needing to use a mobility aid’ Above the text are some symbols of people aiming to showcase what some different disabilities can look like. These symbols include people standing on their own unaided, using a wheelchair and using a cane.

The @deltafoundation has still not responded to messages on lack of accessibility and endangering disabled people so I made them a sign! #heresyoursign ♿️ In all seriousness, the response to my sign made it worth attending. After the incidents the other night, I contemplated skipping the parade this year despite it not requiring me to give a penny to the foundation. However, so many people, disabled and able-bodied, saw my sign and hugged, high fived, thanked me, signed , or took a picture. There was another young wheelchair user who began to cry when she saw my sign, which made ME CRY! Keep fighting the good fight, yall. #MakePrideAccessible #AccessIsLove #ProtectDisabledWomen #ProtectDisabledLGBTQ ♿️️‍ . . . #weareone #pghpride #pghpride2019 #pittsburghpride #priderockspgh #deltafoundation #hellainaccessible #ableism #inaccessibility #healthbeme #webewarrior #autoimmunedisease #uctd #undifferentiatedconnectivetissuedisease #potssyndrome #posturalorthostaticstachycardiasyndrome #dysautonomia #ehlersdanlossyndrome #heds #eds #accessibility #disability
