So stoked for one of my new arrivals this week! I've been looking for MediaWorks' マスタースクリーン (Master Screen) for YEARS and finally found one for sale. After the Shinwa D&D line ended in 1991, MediaWorks picked up the license gave it one last try in 1994. They only published the three volume Rules Cyclopedia, three adventures and this screen before pulling the plug. Unlike Shinwa, MediaWorks adapted to the Japanese market, completely reworking old material into more locally familiar styles... specifically, manga style formatting and artwork. The result was some of the most unique D&D products ever produced. This screen also acted as a supplement, including a 16-page book full of spell and equipment lists, record sheets and map aids as well as a 40-page scenario book which features two beginner level adventures (失われたジルチェフの像 and ビークフ村の黒い病) that I believe are unique to Japan! T1 The Village of Hommlet could probably give the Keep on the Borderlands a run for its money as one of the most widely used "home bases." In fact, Hommlet was the first extensively described town setting (from TSR at least) and in many ways served as the template for all of the home base adventures that followed. And what a standard it set! The village and its inhabitants are described in sufficient detail that the locale really had a character and flavor all its own. Since T1 was really intended as the gateway to a larger adventure in the Temple of Elemental Evil, the vast majority of the book is used to describe the village, with only a bit of a teaser dungeoncrawl in the nearby ruined moathouse. Hommlet has seen multiple incarnations, including both mono and color covers, inclusion in the supermodule T1-4 The Temple of Elemental Evil, an update is 3E's Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil and a 4E revision as part of the DM Reward Program. Weird trivia time... Clyde Caldwell was commissioned to do the updated cover for T1, but it ended up not getting used. Eventually Caldwell's art was used as the cover for the AC5 Player Character Record Sheets. RM3 Web of Illusion is a standalone Ravenloft adventure set in the relatively obscure domain of Sri Raji. As the cover clearly shows, the suave Rakshasa is the primary villain in what is a very atmospheric and think-heavy adventure... hack and slash won't cut it here! Connors does a great job of setting the stage with his outline of the people and culture of Sri Raji. It's a very different type of place and requires a very different approach, especially in dealing with NPC interactions. The format is one that would be odd for most adventure scenarios, but works perfectly for Ravenloft's more dramatic style. Each "scene" receives an overview, preparation notes, a read aloud narrative, potential resolutions, suggested DM theatrics, background information and an aftermath. In a way, it makes me think of 4E "encounter" formatting, except for role players! Night Below: An Underdark Campaign is a massive adventure / setting that expands the underground realms of the World of Greyhawk. Though it was produced as a generic release, it's pretty clear that it was intended to be set in Greyhawk. Author Carl Sargent is well known for his Greyhawk work and Night Below actually explores (at great length) the region of the Sunless Sea, first introduced in Gygax's D-series modules. The fact that several pieces of artwork from the original D-series adventures are sprinkled in throughout Night Below kind of seals the deal. In fact, this set makes a perfect companion to those modules, exploring the non-Drow regions on the opposite shore of the Sunless Sea. Kuo-Toa, Illithid and Derro all take center stage here, though it's the Aboleth who are most prominently featured. Though there's plenty of dungeoncrawling hack and slash to be found here there's also lots of opportunities for other play styles... stealth and diplomacy are often just as viable options. Like most boxed sets from this era, this one is packed full of material.
