This thing ain't like any Oldsmobile seen before or since: it weighs 1600 pounds, has between 800 and 1000 horsepower (depending on boost levels), and runs the quarter-mile in a hair over eight seconds at 180 mph.

Lots of people have mentioned the mighty Oldsmobile Aerotech vis-a-vis the McLaren Speedtail. So here it!! The first photos are the Aerotech LT, which stands for Long Tail. There’s also the Aerotech ST, which you’ll see when you swipe. Designed by Ed Welburn and powered by a boosted 2.3-liter Olds Quad Four, no less a man than AJ Foyt drove this sucker to a 268 mph two-way mile average down in Texas. That’s not top speed. That’s just over a mile. Top speed? About 290 mph. Maybe a touch higher for the LT. That’s faster than a Koenigsegg Agera RS. Pretty cool for 1987, eh kids? Now, obviously, this never carbon fiber single seater never went into production. But it shows you the aero principles the McLaren folks were thinking about when they laid out the Speedtail. Which, by the way, is going into production. History’s kinda cool, huh? #oldsmobile #aerotech
