Did you know that if the proper deactivation procedures are not taken when lifting the aircraft on jacks, the APU will automatically start? When the airplane is lifted on jacks, the landing gear proximity sensors send a weight off wheels indication to the proximity sensor electronic unit (PSEU). The PSEU receives this information and sends it to the aircraft’s systems to let them know the airplane is either on the ground or in the air. The proximity sensor operation is simple. The sensor emits an electromagnetic signal that detects nearby objects also known as a target. The distance between the proximity sensor and the target changes to to give either a NEAR or FAR indication. When you jack the aircraft, you make the airplane think it is in the air. It will also think it is in an emergency as the essential systems are not operating. To name a few on the 777, it can cause automatic operation of the APU, deployment of the RAT, passenger oxygen mask deployment, and heating of the AOA, pitot tubes, and drain masts. Depending on the aircraft, other systems may have to be secured and deactivated. For example, the AOA vane may need to be secured in a leveled position as the stick pusher and shaker may be activated.
