The Queen of the Skies, and the workers of the ramp...without one, the other has no purpose. While many photographers like to view airplanes while they are taxiing or airborne, I like to see all the moving parts in motion under these bright lights on the gate while the people who make the flight work do their part. All these various tasks are the basics of getting any airplane underway. During my years working for British Airways I was the coordinator for all of this both above and below the wing, easily identifiable at BA by a red pilot’s hat as part of the uniform. It is a job I always look back on fondly.

Here, Speedbird 268 has the last baggage containers loaded before her departure home to London on an overcast evening. The forward hold is ready to be closed and contains mostly freight this evening, which has been at the airport for most of the day and is loaded first if possible. The position of each container loaded onto the airplane is shown on the Load Instruction Report, which is created by the flight’s load agent based at headquarters and used by the lead ramp agent to ensure the weight and balance of the airplane is appropriate and correct. The lead also uses the LIR to determine in which order the containers will be loaded.
.
The ramp team is now loading the last of the passenger bags into the rear hold as boarding gets ready to begin. Any gate-checked bags or prams will go into the bulk hold, which is the small open door just to the left of the rear hold and is usually the last to be closed before departure. Once all the loading is complete, the completed LIR is sent back to the office-based load agent in London who updates the flight documentation for the ramp team meeting the aircraft on arrival at LHR, so they know which containers are located in each specific location on the aircraft.

VH-OEB ‘Phillip Island’, almost at the end of her final @qantas journey as she arrives here in Los Angeles this evening to begin being dismantled for retirement. This airplane started her last trip in Sydney with @that_airfield_guy and operated her final passenger flight as Qantas 73 to San Francisco where @jetarazzi and @bayviation caught her this afternoon. She then flew down here to LAX for interior stripping and for her titles to be painted over before taking her final flight in the next few days to Tupelo, Mississippi to be dismantled (which @diecastryan will be observing).
.
This 25-year-old aircraft started her life with Asiana before joining Qantas in 1998. Her name, ‘Phillip Island’, represents an island around 85 miles south of Melbourne, noted for its surfing and seasonal population of penguins. More iconic however are the Longreach titles worn on each of Qantas’ 747s, representing both the long reach of the 747-400’s range, and the town of Longreach, Queensland where Qantas first commenced operations. The 747s brought a new era of air travel to Australians, allowing them to reach nonstop destinations that have helped shape Qantas into the airline it is today. These aircraft will be sorely missed.
