“Awed by the beauty of your virginity, and the exceeding splendor of your purity, Gabriel stood amazed and cried to you, O Theotokos: What hymn of praise shall I offer to you? What name shall I call you by? I am lost and bewildered. And so as I was commanded I cry to you: Rejoice, O you who are full of grace!” “O Champion General, I your City now inscribe to you triumphant anthems as the tokens of my gratitude, being rescued from the terrors O Theotokos. In as much as you have power unassailable, from all kinds of perils free me, so that unto you I may cry aloud: Rejoice! O unwedded Bride!”
- 4th Salutations to the Theotokos
This beautiful hymnology dedicated to the Theotokos is part of The Akathist Hymn - it is divided into 4 parts that are chanted across the first 4 Friday evenings of Lent, and recited in its entirety on the fifth Friday of Lent. It is a truly moving service, we encourage you all to visit your local parish next Friday evening, you won’t regret it! ☦️☺️❤️ Check out the links below for more info and history on The Akathist Hymn

Faberge triptych icon of a Hodigetria Mother of God at the VMFA in Richmond. The Virgin and Christ wear Russian Imperial crowns known as “Monomakh’s Cap” — traditional crowns worn by the czars before the Romanovs. Given the overtly Russian theme, my guess is that the two saints on the side panels are Vladimir and Olga who brought Christianity to Russia. -
Gabriel beheld in amazement,
O Mother of God,
your holiness and your purity’s splendor;
And he cried out to you:
“How shall I praise you?
How shall I address you?
I am hesitant; I marvel!
But, as I was commanded,
I shall greet you:
Hail, full of grace!” —Akathist Hymn

The History Behind the Akathist Hymn: The Siege of Constantinople in 626 - SOPHIA: Dear brother Archons:
Soon we will be in the season of the Great Fast. On the Friday evenings of Lent, we will once again have the opportunity to experience the beautiful and inspiring Lenten Χαιρετισμοί services of the Akathist Hymn offered to the Mother of God. This interesting and informative article gives one account of the origins of the Akathist Hymn, as a hymn of Thanksgiving offered to the Most Holy Theotokos in gratitude, after the Persian and Avar forces besieging Constantinople in the year 626 began to suffer heavy losses and saw, to their dismay, a woman in shining garments with a face full of light at the walls of the city.
This inspiring story is a reminder to us of the Mother of God’s maternal care for us, and of the love and mercy of Almighty God. As we continue preparing for the Great Fast, this article will deepen our love for the Mother of God and our appreciation for the Akathist Hymn, and aid in our prayer and meditation. http://www.sophiausyd.org/articles/the-history-behind-the-akathist-hymn-the-siege-of-constantinople-in-626 #orthodoxy #akathisthymn

Today, on the fifth Friday of Great Lent, we celebrate the Akathist Hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos. Over the past four weeks, the Akathist has been broken up into four parts, called the Salutations, and this week we chant all four stanzas together.
