In my own self reflection, I have found that life is like a river, not a road- twisting and turning, bringing us to unknown places that often don’t match the expectations in our head. Our soul is leading us to things that are bigger and more obscure than what we initially planned. The more we try to stop the flow of our lives and direct it, the more our heart suffers. It is like holding onto the side of the river bank...it is better to let go and allow the flow to carry you along with the current of your soul. Sometimes our life feels like their is a lot of pain and resistance because we are fighting the current. Self reflection can help reveal our deepest soul longing. I posted this earlier this year, but I find myself returning to this pep talk again. As I plan for 2019 and making some serious commitments that I plan to hold myself accountable to, I find the thoughts and feelings surfacing of doubt and uncertainty. “Who the hell am I to do this sort of educating?” “Are you sure you want that sort of commitment?” “Sure, you were heavily and extensively trained in this stuff, but then you became a mom and chose to walk away. You think you can just walk back in?” Fuck you, Gillian. In 2019, you are going to show up. You are going to show not only the doubters and naysayers but also yourself and your kids that you are a force to be reckoned with. Now put on your big girl pants and get that shit done. Now. Gillian, I’m taking to you. . . . . I once had someone tell me I wasn’t qualified before they knew anything about me and my background. They made that determination based on my current professional title. . What did I do about it? First, educated them, quite clearly, about my university and professional history. Secondly, moved beyond my circle at the time and found people who wanted to know about me and my knowledge. People who would back me and help me grow. I’m thankful for these people. They’re my people. They come to my classes from all walks of life, listen to me speak, and then ask after class, “what is your background? Because you didn’t learn that in a 200hr training”. They’re right. I speak what I know and leave the rest at the door. I won’t try to be a PT, osteopath, psychologist, or anything else. But I know the human body and it’s biomechanics. . So, I’m going to keep spreading beyond my current circle.
