A Description of Metta (Loving-kindness):
Metta (maitri in Sanskrit) is the ancient Indian word signifying warm hearted well-wishing. Most commonly translated as “loving-kindness” it has also been translated into English as goodwill, benevolence, amity, kindness, and friendliness. “Loving-kindness” has the benefit of combining two concepts: love and kindness. For different people and at different times one word of this compound may be more meaningful than the other. The loving part emphasizes the deep, warm flow of appreciation and happiness felt either toward oneself, another person, or any living being. The kindness part suggests that the love is concerned with the welfare of others. Combined, the compound word has connotations of a love which is satisfyingly warm and at the same time interested in the happiness and well being of others. Although metta may have a soft aspect to it, it can be phenomenally powerful, especially when joined with unshakeable determination. —Gil Fronsdal

tapobhiḥ kṣīṇa-pāpānāṁ śāntānāṁ vīta-rāgiṇām, mumukṣūṇām apekṣyo ’yam ātma-bodho vidhīyate “I am composing the Atmabodha, or Self knowledge, to serve the needs of those who have been purified through the practise of austerities, and who are peaceful in heart, free from cravings, and desirous of Liberation”
We can learn from this: “to serve the needs”: not to serve our needs in terms of material gain- house/car/monetary wealth... the things of the world, but needs conducive to the attainment of liberation-freedom from that which keeps us entangled in the sufferings of various kinds (attachments, aversions, desires, cravings). “Austerities for purification”: in an effort to lead us to a peaceful heart. Discipline in terms of the body (cleanliness, non violence), speech (words spoken to inspire, empower, uplift others, not degrading or placing judgement on others) and mind (maintaining an inner serenity, kindliness and self control). It takes practise and discipline to shift our habitual patterns of thinking, speaking and doing/to replace the undesirable patterns of behaviour with more desirable patterns for the sake of humanity, all beings and the world in which we live.
