Coming up on two years into her treatment plan, Elsie and her family have already celebrated so many victories on the journey to food freedom – from safely eating at restaurants and parties to the lifting of anxiety that accompanies life-threatening food allergies – the #TIP journey has already made a remarkable impact on the whole family. In their last clinic visit, Elsie and her family were able to see with their own eyes what they have already experienced in their day-to-day lives. Elsie’s mom shared, “These 2 photos are everything! After 21 months of treatment with Dr. Randhawa we know that Elsie can eat varying amounts of ALL nuts now. We know that two years ago consuming even trace amounts of these nuts could have been life-threatening for her. Not only can she now safely enjoy food wherever she goes, but we can actually see the impact of this treatment with our own eyes. These 2 photos show Elsie's skin prick test results 21 months ago on the very first day she started with Dr. R at the Southern California Food Allergy Institute..... and today. The skin test that had her hysterical and sobbing in discomfort before, she just redid with ease. The large angry 'mosquito bite' type skin reactions that we have seen ever since she was 5 months old have gone. And we haven't even reached the finish line yet, which is zero reactivity. •MILK LADDER• In today’s blog post I’m sharing my tips for reintroducing milk if your child has been dairy free due to confirmed allergy. Link in bio We’ve had a few failed attempts along the way but my 4 year old can now eat cooked foods containing milk hurrah! We’ve also completed ladders for wheat, egg, oats and legumes. Hot chips on the beach . Yesterday we made the most of the gorgeous weather and left the house early to spend the day at the beach. We found a great parking space, set up our sun tent and got straight into the water. After lots of playing in the waves and digging in the sand it was time to refuel. The boys ate all the food we packed and wanted more! so hot chips it was from @scorchoramacafe. They have a dedicated gluten free fryer for their chips which is so awesome! The minute the box was open little hands dived into the chips . . I love long summer days and beautiful NZ beaches. I could learn a lot from this girl of mine. Her entire life we have told her avoid eggs, check the ingredients, you can’t eat that but we’ll make it special without eggs for you at home. Since before I can remember, we’re talking even before 2 years old, she’d ask people to read the ingredients before feeding her anything and in her sweet little squeaky voice say “I can’t have eggs or nuts.” But then today, after that being engrained in her head all these years she sits here with an eager smile on her face and complete and utter trust in her Mama (who was basically putting on an Oscar nominated role in not freaking out) and her doctor, because (something else she has learned) we trust our doctors and they have our best interest in mind. Her outlook is bright and without hesitation (well maybe a little bc #rulefollower habits don’t break that easily) and ate 3 doses of a muffin baked with egg in it. She was so brave, so happy and always smiling. After the 3rd dose she developed hives and a red/hot itchy ear so we stopped. Our answer was loud and clear at that moment that this girls’ egg allergy is the real deal even in baked goods. But we would have never known had we not tried! So now our plan moving forward isn’t an easy one but it’s one that will ultimately be her safeguard throughout her life (and Lola’s too). We will be starting both girls in OIT (Oral immunotherapy) for peanuts and adding eggs to Joie’s as well. For 5-6 months we will make the 1.5 hr drive down to Sarasota for weekly appointments with our allergist for “updoses” and the goal is to reach maintenance for each of the girls’ allergens! This means (depending on how they take to the treatment) they may be cleared for free eating of it but at the very least they’ll be safeguarded if cross contamination ever occurred!! I will take you all on this journey with us and I pray for a smooth ride for my girls! Oh what a day!! Oh, and her shirt was totally for me!
