It had been a long time since I made vegan meringues, so when making my latest batch of hummus, I decided it was time! If you need the recipe for vegan (read: egg free!) meringues, go to the "blog" tab from the link in my profile. It's one of the pinned posts! #AllergySuperheroes

What happens when you try to fire EpiPens that have been subjected to extreme heat and cold? In short, well, they won't necessarily work. This began as an experiment by @AllergySuperheroes Eileen Rhoadarmer to see if she could use extreme heat and cold to abuse some (expired) EpiPens to the point where the solution would discolor, but she learned that they seem to require a heck of a lot more abuse before that happens. So she shifted her focus onto what would happen when she fired them. “In this video I fire five EpiPens: a control, one that spent 12 days on the dash of my car in full sun (90 degrees F outside, close to 200 inside) and was allowed to return to room temp, another one that spent 12 days in a hot car and I fired it while still hot, one that was frozen for 12 days but was allowed to thaw, and one that was frozen for 12 days and was fired while still frozen. The results of this definitely surprised me! Based on the limited research that has been done, there is a very good chance that the (again, already expired) epinephrine in these abused devices would have been below full strength, but I unfortunately do not have the ability to test the remaining epinephrine for efficacy.” #epipens #epinephrine #hotandcold #temperatures #saftey #anaphylaxis #foodallergies #allergysuperheroes

@TheMighty is partnering with Lianne Mandelbaum from the @NoNutTraveler and asking food allergy parents, what is one thing you wish people understood about food allergies? “I wish more people understood the life-threatening severity of food allergies. When someone says to me, incredulously, “Someone can DIE from a food allergy?”, my jaw always drops. It happens more often than you can imagine. At school functions, dinner parties, sporting events. The average person doesn’t get it, unless they know someone with a food allergy. I want to sit them down and tell them about Oakley, Jacob, Caroline, Alexi, Max, Elijah, Abbie, Amanda, James, Owen, Annie, Andrea, Joseph, Giovanni, and so so many more. I want to show them all the news stories of the children who have died from anaphylaxis. I talk their ear off about the stats and %s of children who have food allergies. Definitely more than they ever wanted to hear - but oh so necessary. Food allergies are an epidemic and the general public is still so unaware of the risks of exposure. This summer at my child’s camp, parents complained that the camp was nut free, bemoaning the fact that they wouldn’t be able to pack PB&J sandwiches for their child’s lunches. Really? There are many alternatives to slapping a PB&J together. The same goes for that person in row 5 on an airplane who doesn’t get it when an allergy friendly airline doesn’t serve peanuts because someone in row 28 has a nut allergy. They think it’s an inconvenience because of someone’s “dietary preference”. We need to turn around this perception and educate people who don’t have food allergies that anaphylaxis is real. A parent should never outlive their child. Yet, something deemed as trivial as a food allergy by many is stealing our children.” A post by Tatiana ❤️ #foodallergyawareness . . . . . #redsneakersforoakley #foodallergies #perceptions #misinformation #lackofeducation #foodallergyfamily #nutallergy #children #someonecandie #nomoredeaths #livlikeoaks #elijahsecho #loveforgiovanni #macdonstrong #keepsmilinforabbie #purpleforcaroline #walkforandrea #allergysuperheroes

Pretend play has to be one of Arlo’s favourites! Especially playing doctor!! We got him this gorgeous @letoyvantoys set for Xmas last year and it has been well loved! We also added something to it...an epipen training device because Arlo is anaphylactic to dairy, peanuts and egg. It’s been so important to us to teach Arlo about his allergies from a young age because he’s extremely sensitive and also reacts on contact. From when he was about 1 he could understand that if we said something had cheese in it that meant he couldn’t have it. We used the word cheese because we didn’t want him to get confused with other words like ice cream, milk or yoghurt as he had lots of substitutes for those. As his understanding grew, we introduced the other words and since he was about 2 he could tell someone that he couldn’t have anything with cows milk in it or peanuts. Adding the epipen to his doctor kit was the next step in teaching him about his allergies. We took the blue safety out of the top so then if he was to find the real epipen a he wouldn’t know exactly how to use it. Having the training device in his doctor kit has been awesome for familiarising him with it so then he’s not so scared if we have to use a real one. He knows that it needs to go in his thigh and we often hear him playing doctor and one of his toys has had yoghurt and needs the epipen, then he gives it to his toy in it’s leg! Being an allergy parent isn’t easy, but I feel better knowing that we’re doing the best we can to teach Arlo about his allergies and empowering him with the knowledge of how to use the epipen for if ever in the (very far) future he’s in a situation where he needs to tell someone or even use it himself. I’ll also add that we keep our real epipens in a safe place, always visible but out of reach of little people! #allergykids #foodallergymom #cowsmilkproteinallergy #peanutallergymom #allergies #learningathome #learningthroughplaying #playtolearn #allergysuperheroes #milkallergy #foodallergies #allergymama
