- Something that anyone who’s interested in health & longevity should be focused on. In Neurology, ‘redundancy’ is a key concept: the more pathways that the brain has to a memory or to a specific function, the more easily it can access that memory or function. When we spend our lives continually learning new things, moving in new ways & having new experiences, we continue creating new synaptic connections & encouraging the growth of new neurons which allows us to maintain or potentially even improve function into advanced age. ・・・
- A little known & hugely important concept is that different types of exercise can directly target specific brain areas. For more info on this go to @amnacademy i’ve done a couple of lectures on this concept & outlined which exercises will stimulate neurogenesis in which particular brain areas on their ‘The Academy’ site. ・・・
- Neurogenesis is also something I work a lot with in treatment with clients. In general, the nervous system will thrive when we remove interference to communication. Interference might be from: old injuries, scars, surgeries (surgery, though often necessary & ultimately often beneficial, is hugely traumatic on the body), emotional trauma, historic immune issues, gut issues...the list goes on. There are specific acupoints that help stimulate neurogenesis, but that may be another post.

・・・ For a long time, it was believed that the adult brain couldn’t generate new brain cells. You were born with a certain amount of brain cells, and that was it. As you age, you naturally start to lose brain cells & then go downhill in terms of brain function. Science has now shown that growing new brain cells is possible for adults.

How are Neurofibrillary TANGLE formed?
Check out our IGTV @nanobioart for the full version (Alzheimer's Disease) .
How are neurofibrillary tangles formed? When a neuron communicates with another, a signal goes from the body known as #soma to the #synapse to transfer the information. The signal passes through the skeleton of the #neuron composed of #microtubules; these microtubules are stabilized by normal #tauprotein. An #Alzheimer's disease tau protein becomes defective and detached from the microtubules. Thus the skeleton of the neuron dissociates as it is no longer maintained. Defective tau proteins then assemble to form filaments in the neuron. Without the skeleton the neurons degenerate, and connections between the neurons are lost. The abnormal accumulation of tau filaments in the neuron creates #neurofibrillarytangles and eventually causes the death of the neuron.

This morning, fashion icon, author, and artist Gloria Vanderbilt passed away at 95. Although Vanderbilt famously did not have an easy life, dealing with much personal loss, she lived life to the fullest. She is the perfect example of never giving up, of always keeping your brain active, and truly getting (and giving) the most out of life! How are you living life to the fullest this week? #motivationmonday
Strong Evidence Herpes Virus Linked to Alzheimer's⠀
⠀
Mounting research is helping to cement a proposed link between the herpes virus and Alzheimer's disease.⠀
⠀
Researcher Dr Ruth Itzhaki got the ball rolling nearly 30 years ago by first uncovering the herpes-AD relationship. She believes it's time to investigate the use of antivirals in mid-life with the view of preventing AD later on.⠀
⠀
Over the past few decades, research has shown that individuals who are infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) are at increased risk for dementia and that use of antiviral drugs decreases this risk.⠀
⠀
Results of more recent studies suggest the link is more than a mere association.⠀

“I know recently a lot of my Facebook/Instagram posts have been about my mum, but after seeing what she is going through it makes me realise how much we need to beat Alzheimer’s or at least some sort of relief.
I don’t usually share pictures of my mum like this one, it can be quite upsetting, there may be people who wouldn’t want me to share a pic of my mum like this, but it’s my mum l and the truth is, this is why there is no cure or advance in research. Not enough hard hitting adverts and information!
I am guilty my self of only sharing the best “happy” pictures of my mum because they nice! And make you smile. But in this picture you can see what Alzheimer’s has done to my lovely mum.
It is the cruelest thing I have ever seen!
The worst is having your mum there but missing her so so much .
This post isn’t for attention, likes or shares, I feel helpless and can’t do anything for my mum, the least I can do is raise a bit of awareness “ @snap_away_
