. { the despaired } This portrait of Dewi, the Sumatran Orangutan has touched my heart from the beginning till the end. The expression in her eyes were the reason why I chose this photo as my reference and she kept on pushing my boundaries during the whole process. The colors in her fur, the skin on her hand, the fading into black…it was a constant learning curve for me and I am so grateful that we both made it till the very end. This is the second portrait of my series concentrating on the emotions of extinction, and I chose to call this one ‘the despaired’, because it is what I see in her eyes. The future of the Sumatran Orangutan is everything but bright and I read in a recent article, that not only are they critically endangered, but if we don’t act now to save their habitats, they can go extinct in less than 10 years. I often battle my environmental anxieties and need to remind myself to focus on the little things, the changes I can make in my community. I think it will never feel ‘enough’ to just make art and write about it, hoping to reach as many people as possible to raise awareness… but this is my gift and ultimately my superpower and I need to trust it. Textile art CAN make a difference! . . What you can do to save this species from going extinct? Don’t buy products containing palm oil, be conscious, read the label! Also become aware of all alternative names they have come up with to hide the fact, that palm oil is an ingredient… such as ‘vegetable oil’, ‘cetyl alcohol’ or ‘palmolein’. Join a non-profit organization such as @orangutanssos @theorangutanproject and support them in any way you can. We have to stop thinking, that others will take care of it all… we are the others!! . . . Portrait facts:
