Lots of lovely blues and lilacs in the garden at the moment; alliums, cerinthe, delphiniums, salvia, sweet rocket, nigella ....the list goes on. In other news, I ventured out today in between the bouts of much-needed drizzle☔️, to give the perennials a #chelseachop. Always seems rather brutal, but it’ll give me strong blooms which will flower long into the season . #igrewthis #britishflowers #locallygrown #sustainableliving #nopesticides #ecoflorist #spring #feelingblue #bohoflowers #bohowedding #nigella #orlaya #cerinthe #bellflower #buckinghamshireflorist #flowersfromthefarm #amersham

With so much of the narrative around movement within fitness cultures being driven by body image and weight loss, the benefits of movement beyond the way we look are often overshadowed.
There’s an abundance of adverts, social media posts and media headlines which fixate on burning calories, lack body diversity and strongly associate movement with weight management. Consequently they continue to perpetuate the idea that thin and lean bodies are both ‘good’ bodies and merely a product of lifestyle changes.
.
Challenging this discourse by refusing to serve the idea that movement and food are there to shrink our bodies is often met with resistance and can be seen as a form of neglection or giving up on your health, particularly if you don’t fit societies narrow depiction of what a healthy body is.
.
However the idea that we should be using movement as a tool to support weight loss, particularly for fat people, negates both the complexities of weight and health whilst ignoring the broader benefits of moving beyond the way we look. .
It also isn’t without its risks to our physical, mental and social health and wellbeing.
.
But by letting go of the idea of using movement to burn calories and lose weight we can instead start to reframe movement as an opportunity to socialise, develop new skills, build strength, increase aerobic fitness, improve mobility, support your mental health, manage some types of pain and more.
.
Through this rejection, we can shift the way we view movement as something which might be viewed as a chore or punishment, to a more positive and social experience that can have a positive impact on our physical, mental and social health and wellbeing.
.
If you’ve been struggling with your relationship with movement, spending time reframing what it is can be somewhat of a liberating experience, even if a challenging one. It’s an experience that takes into account your health and wellbeing beyond the physical and distances yourself from the vice like grip of diet culture.
.
For those of you who enjoy movement currently (I know not everyone can at this time and that’s OK) what do you enjoy about it (non-weight related) and why?
Getting active is rarely just a case of making it a 'priority’.
.
Now for some it might seem that moving your body is a no brainer and a necessity we all must make time for. But for many getting active presents itself with challenges and in some cases an opportunity cost.
.
Barriers to getting active can present themselves in various forms and in many cases intertwine. As an example, a single parent on a low income might not be able to afford the gym membership, travel and childcare on a regular basis whilst juggling a job.
.
“Go for a run instead, that’s free” I often hear people say. But the thought of going for a run in the dark after work with a child in tow might seem like an endeavour with too many risks particularly if you don’t live in a great neighbourhood.
.
That’s just one scenario but you could also include disability, chronic illness, mental illness, poor experiences of environments such as gyms and sports clubs, lack of time due to long working hours, weight stigma, lack of appropriate facilities, lack of motivation, lack of choice, sexism and lack of access. All factors which influence both daily life and our ability to get active.
.
So when people simply state that others who are not participating in movement are not making it a priority, I see the barriers which exist for millions of people are invalidated and ignored.
.
But this kind of messaging is neither supportive or accurate but instead incites feelings of guilt and shame.
.
Instead, we need to be mindful of messaging within fitness which tars everyone with the same brush and overemphasises individual responsibility. The current narrative implies that those who aren’t active are at fault, when there are legitimate barriers we often overlook or take for granted as a consequence of our own lived experience.
.
Of course we should look to inspire people to get active, but it’s important to ensure we don’t evoke feelings of guilt and shame in the process, or implying those who aren’t active as moral failures.
.
Not everyone has the same opportunity.
.
Not everyone has the same experience.
.
Not everyone can make it a priority.
Starting the week off right with a Ferrari F355 Spider, in our opinion the only convertible car in existence that looks better than its coupe variant ❤

At the start of the week, I had no idea I’d be doing this. ♀️ But today, I’ve been back to #buckinghamshire for the first time in like, forever.
It’s almost unbelievable and probably serendipity but literally just down the road from where I lived with Sonny Jim, where we spent many happy years, there was another puli boy who needed a home.
I felt sad driving the old familiar routes and not having Jimbones with me. But of course, he was with me, wasn’t he. He sent me to get this pup. ☺️
So, say hello to Archie Forbes. He’s found a forever home with us now
