Amplexo...

We now hear all the time bad news about #amphibian populations declining all over the world and specially the "Atelopus" genus. However, some people are fighting really hard to save the remaining populations of the world's most endangered #amphibians, as @fundacionatelopus in Colombia (go follow them!).
Here, a pair of "Atelopus spurrelli" that I photographed with the lovely @morromico, a family whose lives turn around the majestic #Choco rainforest and its #conservation. With people like them, the world is more colorful!

The rains last week were strong enough to refill the water in the dried out drainage ditches on campus and we were surprised at the sight which greeted us when we checked out the SEC complex canal parallel to Masterson Drive! There were more than 12 pairs of the highly invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina) paired up in a tight mating embrace. This embrace, called amplexus, has the male on top of the female, tightly grasping her by the head or armpits with his front legs. Fertilization occurs externally, as the female releases the eggs from ther body. The round, dark eggs can be found floating in the water in a jelly-like shoestring.
Some unpaired individuals were trying to displace paired males - doing their best to try to outwrestle them. But the amplexus is so tight that the interception is often unsuccessful and despite the struggle, attempts to dislodge the male are in vain.
Cane toads are said to eat almost any terrestrial mammal - from invertebrates to small reptiles and mammals. They also secret a toxin from glands behind their eyes and ears which can cause illness and death to domestic and wild animals which come into contact with the toads. Sadly, this amphibian, calssified as a global Invasive Alien Species (AIS) is the most reported on campus - reflecting how successful they are in edging out native species. Where have you seen it recently? Let us know!
