The floors of the ambulatory galleries in the Camposanto Monumentale in Pisa are lined with tombstones. Of particular note are those of members of a hooded flagellant confraternity which processed along these corridors.

Onophrius [see my previous two postings] was one of the early Desert Fathers of the 3rd and 4th centuries. At this time many Christians were inspired to live a life of extreme hardship in the Egyptian desert. Almost 1000 years later it again became quite a phenomenon in the south of Italy. The scale of the “Thebiadisation” (based on ancient Thebes, where the desert hermits were thought to have lived in Egypt) of Italy (and Spain) seems to have been an immense movement. I had never heard of it until I saw the huge “Anchorites” fresco in the Camposanto in Pisa. It had been completely missing from my art history education (if I was aware of Fra Angelico's “Thebiad” in the Uffizi I didn't understand it at all). It really puzzled me and I set off to see some of these places when I got a chance.

The Camposanto Monumentale (monumental cemetery) is the fourth monument of the Pisan "Field of Miracles". Its restrained rhythmic structure of blind arches and simple pilaster strips contrasts in its austerity with the highly decorative facades of the Duomo (Cathedral), Battestero (Baptistery) and Campanile (Bell Tower - the famous Leaning Tower) in the Piazza del Duomo.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Cemetery was designed in 1272 by Giovanni di Simone, who with this tranquil elongated facade constructed a coherent and elegant backdrop to the existing monuments, the most recent of which, the Campanile, had been commenced almost a century before. Di Simone’s structure echoes the Piazza’s other backdrop, the Spedale di Papa Alessandro (Pope Alexander’s Hospital), which was constructed just a few years prior to the Camposanto on the south side of the Piazza and which now, appropriately, houses the Sinopie (fresco underdrawings) discovered after a WW2 bombing raid and subsequent fire which destroyed much of the lead roof, whose melting caused so much irrecoverable damage to the contents of the Camposanto in 1944.

The building was the fourth and last one to be raised in the Cathedral Square. It dates from a century after the bringing of a huge amount of soil from Golgotha, and was erected over the earlier burial ground.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The construction of this huge, oblong Gothic cloister was begun in 1278 by the architect Giovanni di Simone. He died in 1284. The cemetery was only completed in 1464.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It seems that the building was not meant to be a real cemetery, but a church called Santissima Trinità (Most Holy Trinity), however the project changed in importance during the construction.

The Camposanto contained a huge collection of Roman sarcophagi. Today only 84 remain, together with a collection of Roman and Etruscan sculptures and urns.
The sarcophagi were initially spread all around the cathedral and were reused to hold the remains of the most famous Pisan citizens. Once the cemetery was complete, they were collected in the grassy area of the interior, scattered all over the meadow. Carlo Lasinio, in the years he was the curator of the Camposanto, collected many other ancient relics that were spread about Pisa to make an archeological museum inside the cemetery. Nowadays the sarcophagi are inside the ambulatory galleries, near the walls.
