Beautiful capture by @wibkewo showcasing just how wonderful the waterholes at Etosha National park are. We could sit for hours waiting to see which animals come down for a drink, and observing how they interact with each other. See if you can spot the gemsbok/oryx in among this group too!

I do not set the rules for animal behaviour.
You do not set the rules for animal behaviour.
The individual animal will set its own rules for how it behaves.
It is the responsibility of every keeper and owner of any animal, to understand what those boundaries are. They will vary and be different from animal to animal.
My understanding with Sonny and Cher at this point in time is as long as you don’t hurt or frighten us, anything you do is permissible.
They just seem content ‘being’.
And then you realise they behave like so many different animal species. Including ourselves.

These feeding humpback whales are displaying a behaviour called lunge feeding where, underwater, they herd the fish (often anchovies) into balls and then, in sync with other whales herd them towards the surface. Once trapped there, they suddenly lunge at them and take a big gulp of fish into their mouths. They then push the water out through their baleen plates, which they have instead of teeth, and swallow the fish inside. Birds and sealions throw themselves at the fish as they leap out of the water. Sometimes pelicans and sea-lions have been observed accidentally getting caught inside a whale’s mouth, in which case the whale gently opens its mouth them to let them out.

Throwback to 2016 when conservation photographer @jenguyton was successful in #WPY52 with this picture of meerkats being weighed by scientists.
The meerkats co-operate fully, lured by a few drops of water, a precious resource in their desert home. While working with the Kalahari Meerkat Project, Jen wanted to show the other side of academic research and ‘what it’s like to interact closely with these fascinating and beautiful animals’. Researchers studying the evolution of social behaviour had to get the meerkats used to being around people so they could gather essential data. Meerkats’ sophisticated social organisation, where only one pair in the group breed and the others help bring up the young, is teaching us more about co-operation in other mammal species.
