Dear @Instagram, you took down this post today where I urged us all to not look away from the horrible treatment of refugee children in the US. I used this Mr. Rogers quote. Somehow empathy and Mr. Rogers were deemed offensive and this was removed. I would like answers. And to whoever reported this as offensive- shame on you.

Thank you to the folx I tagged for helping me identify my blind spots & investment in racism- whether you know it or not. So much of the education you offer is free & I appreciate it immensely. For all white folx: This book is required reading. “I know that I have blind spots And unconscious investments in racism. My investments are reinforced every day in mainstream society. I did not set this system up, but it does unfairly benefit me, I do use it to my advantage, and I am responsible for interrupting it. I need to work hard to change my role in this system, but I can’t do it alone. This understanding leads me to gratitude when others help me.”

I sent an email to @fundacionvictorjara telling them about my upcoming Spanish Assembly, and the humble homage to #victorjara we were going to have during the performance. I asked if one of his daughters could send a video to encourage my 4th grade students to sing with their hearts full of Victor that day ♥️ The performance took place yesterday (I’m editing the videos to send them to @fundacionvictorjara next week) I’m overwhelmed beyond words that Amanda took time to send this beautiful message to us. Her greeting came right before the performance and when I shared it with my students, some of them teared a little. I cried my eyes out when I saw it the night before. Even some of the parents told me they had teared with the video and when they heard the children singing Canto Libre and El Derecho de Vivir en Paz ✨ Amanda Jara, tu padre vive en nuestros corazones y su canto no es solo libre, es eterno✨ abrazos gigantes para tu madre y para todos ustedes que nos recuerdan día a día la importancia del amor, y el el valor de la lucha por la justicia. A must read for educators, parents, and anyone who wishes to know the answer to the title question. This book may have been written in the 90’s but its lessons on the development of racial identity are still just as relevant today. Though Tatum focuses mainly on the development of Black identity and white racial awareness, she also delves into the unique circumstances which shape Latinx, Native American, Asian, and biracial identities. The knowledge I've gained will stay with me as I move forward in my career as an educator. It is crucial for students of color to have peers who can relate to their unique circumstances, and it is equally as necessary that they see their culture reflected in their classroom materials.

#Repost @blackapple4ed with @get_repost ・・・ For the first time in my academic life, I was out on academic probation in grad school. ⠀ ⠀ This past semester was incredibly hard for me mentally and emotionally and my grades started to take a dive (to the B+/B- pool might I add)⠀ ⠀ When I got the notification that I hadn’t made the “cut”, I immediately had feelings of dropping out and quitting my graduate program. Then I thought about how my kids might feel when they grow older and are put in similar circumstances. ⠀ ⠀ I thought about how the system is continuously failing students and taxing them to death with unrealistic expectations and coursework that doesn’t apply to life. That is in a gist why my grades went down; the assignments had nothing in comparison to what life was handing me. ⠀ ⠀ We set unrealistic expectation of kids and people, then we expect them to surpass the bar, and when they don’t we make them feel dumb, which leads them to less productive entities and the end result is never good. ⠀ ⠀ Instead of criminalizing students who do poorly and making them feel lesser than, we have to support, uplift, and compel students with the tools to succeed.
