The large hammer is used by plasterers for lathing timber stud walls to receive horsehair lime plaster. This example
was found in a void at the bottom of a partition wall. The tradesman who owned it dropped it from above and must decided that it wasn’t worth destroying his finished work to retrieve! It had laid there since 1911! The shaft bears testimony marks of his grip,his index finger wore an impression from years of hard labour. A 19th century purchase. A true Victorian piece!! Makers mark, PALMER & SONS. Yes I have tried it at work...Nice...l would have cut a whole in the plaster in 1911 to retrieve it !!! #flatlayfriday #antiquetools #sheffield #timmins #rosewood
