It was the perfect day for a bad day. Sitting in the warmth of a hostel, I stared out the window as misty rain struck the windowpane and I silently promised, “Just one more cup of coffee. Then, I’ll venture out.” By 8:30, the time for procrastination had passed. I pulled on my still-damp raincoat, strapped on my pack, and stepped outside. While fog masked the task ahead, my guidebook didn’t. A 4,000-foot climb and 3,300-foot descent stood between me and an evening’s rest. Already saturated by the cold rain, we broke through the tree line a half-mile or so before the summit. With nothing to hold back its fury, the wind whipped around us, pelting exposed skin with with pellets of seemingly weaponized water. Temperatures plummeted further, and visibility dropped dramatically, now obscuring not only the landscape but upcoming trail markers too. Frustration and fear would have been justified, given the conditions. But that’s not where my head was on this day. Energized by the notion that I’d conquered the climb through the worst of conditions, I could only laugh atop Mt. Mooselauke. We’ve been in the Smokies for the better part of a week now and I have taken so many photos I don’t know how I will ever post them all. It is a magical place, full of streams and peaks and history and pure, untouched beauty. . . Cade’s Cove opens every day at sunrise, but sometimes the best light is before the sun comes up. So I brought my bike and arrived at the parking lot at 5:30 AM, riding into the cove in complete darkness which was a bit spooky. I took the loop, watched out for bears and elk, and ended up at the Ike Lequire Cemetery.
