Casa do Monte (2019) Leopold Banchini Architects, in collaboration with Daniel Zamarbide of BUREAU, Lisbon, Portugal. Located near the Nossa Senhora do Monte chapel, dating to 1147, this formerly abandoned residence on a steep hillside is accessible only via a narrow stairway. Banchini maintained the original fenestration and concrete envelope but reconfigured the interior spaces to create larger volumes, maximizing daylight and views. Each of the three floors of the single family residence has a central core that provides elementary needs; beds, showers, kitchen, equipment. A large and fluid living space - sometimes double height - surrounds the cores, allowing for multi-purpose and modulating use. Light fabric curtains and wood sliding doors provide enclosure when needed. Local pink and white marble from the nearby quarry of Estremoz is used to create interior walls and a blue enameled steel staircase connects the three floors, providing access to the rooftop swimming pool with endless views of Lisbon.
