Honey mushrooms are edible and sometimes choice. Those growing on hardwoods seem better tasting than those on firs, although the differences may be species specific. Here, Armillaria ostoyae, is fruiting on climax alders, which are transitioning out as the fir forests recover, dominating the canopy and shading out the once pioneering alders that typically come in directly after a clear cut. Both a saprophyte and a parasite, these species (including A. mellea and A. gallica) project black, cross netted rhizomorphic mycelium, the cause of laminated root rot. Armillaria ostoyae claim to fame is that it is the largest organism in the world, with a colony in eastern Oregon U.S. that is more than 2200 acres in size, more than 2000 years old. The trees are killed in mass, and the ecology transforms into meadows.
