Since people have been asking, here it is! The story of my business: MacKenzie-Smith Medieval Arms & Armor ⠀
⠀
The Birth of MacKenzie-Smith:⠀
⠀
I made my first armor in 1975 when I started fighting in the SCA. Armor standards were still very minimal in those days, but it was a rough game and you had to have your head and vitals protected. I had no experience with shaping metal or how armor was made, but I was desperate—my body was a mass of bruises. ⠀
⠀
My first effort was a pair of articulated legs made on the floor of my parent’s garage over Christmas break (I was in college at the time.) They were funky but were lightyears better than the basketball kneepads that I had been wearing. My next effort was a helmet so I could escape the huge, flat-topped great helm I had been borrowing. My new helmet (pictured here) was less than pretty but it worked well and served me for a number of years.⠀
⠀
There was hardly any armor for sale in those days, so when word got out that I could produce basic, serviceable gear, people started asking me for helmets, legs, etc. I was happy to do so, but armoring remained a hobby for the next ten years as I pursued a career as a university English instructor.⠀
⠀
In 1983, I left my teaching career and started making armor full-time. Thus, MacKenzie-Smith Medieval Arms & Armor was born. People have often asked me if I had a partner named Smith. No! A smith is someone who smites metal with a hammer. I was MacKenzie the Smith.
This, is the finished product, for this year. As I was getting dressed for the Faire, I realized one of the clips securing the shoulders to the chest piece had completely broken off on one side, somehow. I got to the Faire, and I was told to don the captain marvel armor, and they replaced both smaller clips, with larger ones.
Then, Tom listened as I explained a concept I wanted to try, to eliminate the possibility of me tugging on the nylon ties to potentially pop rings somewhere again. I wanted to replace the nylon with chainmaille connected at certain specific lengths, to use that tension it would create to hold the chest piece in place, where I could still just slip it on like a shirt.
We got it done, I explained what I wanted to brainstorm as potential bottom half accents that we could discuss and work on over the next year, and I ran off to finally get to see, at least, some other parts of the Faire this year. Lol.
I ended up in a place that had circlets, crowns, ear cuffs, hand flowers, bracelets, and rings. I had always wanted to find a circlet or crown that fit both my head and my outfit properly, and had never found anything close.
After trying on several types and pairs of ear cuffs, I realized I was too non-girly coordinated to be able to put on the larger, more extravagant ones. (I'm just bad at girl things...lol.) I found smaller dragonet ones that were perfect both for my outfit and my skill level, and the circlet you see on my head is actually two different circlets woven together to product that shape and effect. I LOVE this circlet we created. So, we have 2/3 of my dragon in humanoid form thingy done? And, most of this venture was a gift. I simply cannot express effectively, how thankful I am for this gift.
