Throwback to that time I dealt with anger and frustration in a beautiful, productive way... Do you ever use art as a healing tool, or a therapy? . . A friend of mine recently said that music and art are a lot cheaper than therapy. I couldn't agree with her more. This is a piece I created out of frustration. I felt stuck and completely helpless in a difficult life situation, and I needed something to do to release. I turned up the volume on one of my favorite Tool songs and threw this canvas down and started flinging the paint around. And through that negative emotion I created something beautiful. I used both music and art to flood my senses, and it ended up turning frustration into satisfaction. . . **I must make a disclaimer, though- not every painting I do in this fashion turns out! I have a special, messy, frivolous canvas I keep put away, for the moments I don't feel like trying to make something that looks appealing. I do consult my big ugly canvas from time to time. Maybe one day I'll put it on display, with all of its tumultuous layers from years past... And some of the things that bring me the most joy are listening to music, talking about music, and painting to music. My all-time favorite posts are the ones where I pose the question to you: what is a song that makes you FEEL? If you click on that hashtag up there, and read through the comments on my last couple of posts on this subject, you'll see I've had so many amazing suggestions from YOU GUYS! . . These posts have led to some meaningful conversations about the power of music, and they have led me to some of my favorite songs! Ok, so play along with me again, will ya? In your life right now, in your current situation, what is your music obsession? Maybe its a song no one else understands- the others, they just don't get it. So, when you retreat to be alone, and you play that song that you just NEED, what do you choose? . . I will listen to every. single. song suggestion this weekend. I don't care if it is opera or gangster rap I will listen to it all! And then I am going to paint to one of them. Throwback to the creation of my very first "collection" of artworks in 2017- each one of those pieces behind me was a music inspired piece. I listened to a song on repeat while I created, and then named each piece after that song. . . This was a refreshing series to create, because I felt like I was coming back to my true self after having my head completely occupied with motherhood and teaching for years. I realized at one point that I had all kids' choice CDs in the car, all I read were parenting books, and all I focused on for work was kids' art. I was being a great mom and school teacher, but I was neglecting myself. . . During these paintings I felt like I was coming back to life. Me, Sara Moons. Not mom, not Mrs. Moons. It was such an amazing feeling, and I relished the creation of each and every painting. My senses were completely immersed- my headphones blaring hard rock paint and pastels all over my hands, visual translation of the music appearing spontaneously in my paper. . . . I think this is a phase all parents probably go through at some point. We get so wrapped up in our kids' lives and then realize we need to spend some time on what made us unique before kids. I was thrilled to have music and art to turn to again when I was ready. . "How exciting... To be lost and have to find myself all over again." . .
