This grouping (and some others not pictured) are on their way to Vancouver, BC, to @sortdays—the lovely ship/studio space for the guys (@alvinkwan and @vincelo) of @studiofaculty. They have a lovely, curated selection of work—pieces that fit a contemporary minimalist aesthetic, while at the same time are the sort of pieces that are/will become classics—timeless in their pared-down, clean lines and function-forward designs. So, I decided to hang on to "Organic" for a while, which was the large scale namesake painting for my solo exhibit last November. I feel like it embraces who I am as an artist- it has the perfect amount of weird, and I want it to lead what I have yet to discover about myself. I was blown away at the comments that came in a couple posts back about art as a therapy. I found out that a lot of you are in the same boat, learning more about yourselves through your art and I think that is such a beautiful thing. What a beautiful thing to discover during this life- that every time we put paint to canvas, we are pouring ourselves out and then learning from it. I feel like we've discovered one of life's ultimate treasures. . . This was my write-up before the show (I want to keep riding this wave to see what happens): . . I am preparing for a solo exhibit in November, and one thing I am pushing myself to do is hone in on my spontaneous, organic style. I've been struggling a bit on figuring out "who I am" as an artist, so I've been doing a lot of self reflecting. One constant I know I have in my art is curvy, organic lines. This piece I recently did is a perfect example of what I want to do for this upcoming show. I was really in tune to what the art was telling me to do. I had a sweet little studio assistant today, helping press the remote button for my camera. It was a pretty big deal, and oh soooo cool. I am photographing this big beauty for an exciting opportunity that I am applying for this weekend. I’M JUDGING YOU (well... I’m judging your work). That’s right – I am one of the judges for @print_mag’s Regional Design Awards! for the NYC region. . There are lots of categories that are right up my alley like illustration, handlettering, wearables and environmental design. Entries are open until April 1st. . To be honest, I’ve never won any awards for my work. Actually back in design school, my work was not really recognized either. It’s always been a bit of a chip on my shoulder but later I realized the awards don’t make the designer. It’s about the work, what you stand for and how you impact the community around you. . All that aside it’s still cool to be chosen as a judge alongside some other awesome creatives like @carlyayres and @courtygooch. I’m excited to review all the entries next month! .
