Book of the week 2/3 Kicki Lundgren / Floating The Swedish photographer Kicki Lundgren brings together in her book "Floating" a series of pictures that show bathers on the coasts of Turkey and Croatia. Most of the black-and-white images are very minimalistic in composition, showing a range of bathing activities, from light water contact, to funny splashes, to meditative-looking levitation. In this way, Lundgren declines the human body language in the water by combining image types such as portraits, details, and landscape-like scenes, always focussing on the swimmers. The mostly older people in her pictures convey an impression of unusual serenity and tranquility, reminiscent of the simplicity of the joy of swimming in nature - and inevitably of carelessness, freedom and childhood. The series could have been more consistent – some of the images are a bit off the straight compository frame – but it‘s still an impressive sequence that gains a metaphorical insight by focussing on a simple action that at first glance almost looks banal. The beautiful design by Gösta Flemming makes it a truly special book - showing the importance and influence of a good layout. Conclusion: a really nice book, which refers to the simple beauties of life and convinces not least by its amazing design.
