A slight detour from my usual feed of art, design and garden to a little celebration of family, community, youth and an American classic — prom night. The weather held and the spring mountain light gilded everyone. I have seen many of these kids grow up — a handful since preschool — and managed to cry only once. I believe a big part of my purpose is to bring yoga to schools. My journey has brought me to my current honor of teaching a Yoga course at Aspen High School, and while last year when they offered me a full time PE/Health job at AHS (that included teaching a brand new yoga course), it felt “easy,” the work I had done for the previous twelve years both with high schools and with yoga manifested. It is better than I imagined to watch adolescents with ALL their (very real) tough stuff have a place that’s safe to be off their phones, with each other, practicing and truly learning what yoga is- a practice and tool for life. Sign ups for the elective course after one year are more than tripled. And just like that we’re done with Aspen Middle School. I want to give a shout out to Andy @randolbass for being one of 5 kids out of 130 to graduate with straight A’s for 4 years. His commitment, consistency and perseverance amazes me. His compassion and respect for his teachers, coaches, fellow students and parents makes me truly proud.
