Athlone, County Westmeath It may look like the colourful centre of any small Irish town but look a little bit closer and there's a rather special establishment taking pride of place in the town of Athlone - the geographic heart of Ireland . Sean's Bar (front and centre with the Guinness toucan in the picture) is officially the oldest pub in Ireland and quite possibly the oldest in the world - dating back all the way to the year 900. There are plenty of claimants on the title but only Sean's has the Guinness Book of Records plaque to prove it. So time to capture some memories... ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ Athlone is a town in central Ireland. The medieval Athlone Castle offers views from its battlements, plus displays on local history. South of town, along the River Shannon, the early Christian ruins of Clonmacnoise include a cathedral and 7 churches. To the north, vast Lough Ree is dotted with islands, some housing monastic ruins.
