I don’t think I’ve ever posted artwork before, but this piece is so perfect, I couldn’t resist. This is a recruiting ad for the US Army Air Forces…the predecessor to the US Air Force. Initially, I thought this was a recruiting ad for the US Army, and the idea of luring unsuspecting young boys into Army aviation with promises of supersonic jaunts into the troposphere only to find themselves flying Bell 47s in Korea seemed misleading, to say the least. It made more sense when I realized this ad was published in February of 1947…just seven months before the USAF was formed. In the caption, the aircraft pictured is called the XS1…which is interesting, as that was the original designation of the Bell X-1 in which Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier. This ad was published just over a year after the X-1’s first flight, and seven months before Yeager broke the sound barrier in it. It’s unclear to me whether the X-1 had been revealed to the public at that point, but the color and fuselage shape are certainly consistent, so it would be interesting to find out. To me, the real story here is the magnificent artwork. With the streamlined rocket plane blasting straight up through the ethereal atmosphere and piercing the edge of space, and a separate view of the pilot wearing a stylish spacesuit complete with a Martian-style helmet, the artwork is a perfect example of Atomic Age design. I wish I knew the name of the artist, because it would be amazing to obtain a high-quality reproduction and seek out his or her other works. And it kills me to know that the original artwork might actually exist somewhere, packed in a crate and stored away in some nondescript government warehouse. Shot a quick video of my restored Youngstown Kitchen cabinet set. A lot of you have seen pics of various areas but not the whole kitchen, so here it is. It took me just about a year to track down all the various size/shape pieces I needed to complete this. I then spent about 3 months stripping them down for paint and powder coating. Still amazed at how well these have stood the test of time. They range in age from 1948 to 1954.
