Hey everyone! My name is Katharine, aka @thepeppyscientist, and I am an immunologist at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra (check out @ouranu and @anu_science if you want to see the university!). As an immunologist my passion is the immune system, and my research focuses on learning more about how long-lasting, high-affinity antibodies are produced in response to invading pathogens. More specifically, I am trying to dissect the genetic, molecular and cellular events that regulate the production of these antibodies, and how defects in the production of these antibodies result in autoantibodies (antibodies that react against self-tissues rather than foreign pathogens), which can lead to autoimmune diseases such as lupus, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. The goal of my research is to improve diagnoses for patients with autoimmune diseases, and to identify targeted and personalised therapies for these patients.
.
My science journey actually started back in the third year of my medical science degree, when I was completing a compulsory immunology course. During this time my sister was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and I was beginning to develop symptoms of an autoimmune disease too (later diagnosed as a connective tissue disease similar to lupus). This made me want to understand more about autoimmune diseases and what ground-breaking research was happening in the field, so I commenced an honours research year in an immunology laboratory at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) at the ANU, under Professor Carola Vinuesa. I obviously loved it, because I commenced a PhD the following year in the same lab... which is where I am now-the final year of my PhD (woo!).
.
I love chatting to everyone in the science community, and I feel blessed to be part of such an inspiring group of people… so please hit me up, even if it is just to say hello!

If you thought I danced 24/7 then I wouldn't blame you - my instagram suggests that's the case. What you might not know is that I'm undertaking my PhD in Medical Research at @ouranu after my bachelors degree in Genetics, and an honours year in Immunology, I decided that I kinda love this science thing. So, I began my PhD studying genetic causes of Immune Deficiency and Autoimmune conditions. I am trying to work out how mutations in certain genes can lead to changes in the immune system, in the hope that this will lead to more personalised and effective treatment for patients
Catch me at The Canberra Hospital or at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, doing experiments, giving presentations and looking great in a lab coat I thought I'd share this today so that anyone, and particularly all my dance students, can see that you don't have to give up dance for your school or your career. I find that dance is the perfect counterpart to my research - both need creativity, problem solving, and commitment. I'm so fortunate to be able to do both things that I love so much!
That's all for today, hope you're doing what you love right now ☀️ #phdstudent #dancer #teacher #immunology #science #stem #medicine #scienceanu #immunedeficiency #autoimmunedisease #australiannationaluniversity
