It’s a big old world of options when it comes to all the types of bread out there (almost as big as the world of yogurts ), and naturally so, I get a lot of questions on what type of bread to serve babies. Will you tag a mama who may benefit from this info?⠀

While each type of bread has it’s benefits, most of them have a couple cons as well. So although I’m going to list out some key things to look for down below, the key with bread is to look at how it fits within the BIG PICTURE of foods your baby eats on a regular basis, and know that it’s not necessary to find the PERFECT one. Let our lesson in bread for babies begin:⠀

✔️ First and foremost, safety rules all. Because whole and even chopped nuts/seeds can be a choking hazard for kids <4, you’ll want to avoid bread that has seeds/nuts in it. Sometimes, the nuts/seeds are confined to the outer crust, in which case you can just remove the crust and serve the rest.⠀

✔️ Next, you want to look for a bread with the least possible amount of sodium. Bread in general has always been known to be a big sodium contributor in even adult diets - mainly because of the quantity we eat. But for babies, even a quantity of 1 piece a day can max out the amount of salt they should have each day (which by the way, is about 400mg total, or about 200 mg from food). Considering most babies aren’t actually consuming more than one piece of bread a day, this may not be a big deal, unless they are eating other high in salt foods in large amounts as well (i.e cheese). Most bread types have between 100-200 mg of salt per slice. Aim to find one that’s 100 mg or less.⠀

✔️ As with everything, aim to have little to no added sugar. Especially for babies. Most breads have at least 2 g added sugar/slice, but there are others that have less!

✔️Finally, babies don’t need tons of fibre, so the focus on whole grains every time doesn’t apply to them. I like to alternate between whole grain, white, and other types like sourdough.⠀
