Would you ever use a car seat from the 1980s to protect your child? Of course not! (If you’re unsure google a picture of a car seat from the 1980s I’m sure you’ll agree). If you think about why you wouldn’t use an old car seat, you might think it’s unsafe, it’s outdated, &that the research & safety testing done over the past 30+ years have found better ways to take care of our children. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So why is it that we would absolutely never use a car seat from the 80s but we’re all too okay to follow parenting practices from 30 years ago? When you look at the list of best sellers & see the methodologies that are used today, you almost definitely are led to the books by Dr Weissbluth and Dr Ferber. Their methodologies on “improving your child’s sleep habits” are some of the most commonly referenced & used sleep training methods.THIS IS THIRTY YEAR OLD INFORMATION! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why are we trusting this still with our most vulnerable babies and toddlers? Is it because the information was so perfect that it stood the test of time? Was there no need for further research?
Of course not. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There has been so much further research done over the past 30 years that helps us to understand why these methods work & their impact to infant mental, emotional, & developmental health. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Child development expert, Dr Gabor Mate states, “As a family physician, I used to advocate the Ferber technique & as a parent, practised it myself. Since then, I have come to believe that the method is harmful to infant development & to a child’s long-term emotional health.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is someone who knows better & now is doing better. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These methodologies keep getting suggested because they “work”. Children stop signaling for their parents when their parents stop showing up but they have not learned how to sleep any better, & as Dr Neufeld asks, “at what cost?”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So remember to always ask yourself how old the information is and is there newer or better information out there to follow ❤️

Just like babies need to learn how to get a good latch when breastfeeding, how to roll, how to crawl and walk, babies also need to learn how to sleep. Learning to self soothe is essential (and so is a great swaddle and full tummy)!

It's TUMMY TIME!
WHY is it necessary and what do you do if you have a TUMMY TIME HATER?
-
Tummy Time:
➡️helps to strengthen the neck and back
➡️allows for muscle stretching and mobility
➡️reduces the chance of plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome)
➡️encourages developmental milestones like rolling and crawling
-
What do you do if your baby just isn't having it?
Understand that haters CAN learn to enjoy tummy time.
Begin in the first days of your baby’s life (but it’s never too late to begin either).
Start slow. Even 20-60 seconds at a time is great.
Make it a no-cry experience.
Do it for as long as your little one tolerates and then try again later.
Do it multiple times a day. Think: at least 8-10 times or more.
Start with laying your baby on your chest or across your lap.
Get down on the floor with your baby so you can see eye-to-eye. Sing, smile, and talk.
Use a boppy or rolled blanket to prop your little one up a bit.
Place toys or books close enough for your baby to see.
Find a non-breakable mirror as babies love their own reflection.
Don’t let it cause you stress. Make it fun. If today didn’t have much tummy time, try for more tomorrow.
Follow an occupational therapist like @candokiddo for more.
-
When to do tummy time:
✅When baby is awake
✅Before and after diaper changes
✅When you are supervising baby 100%
-
When NOT to do tummy time:
❌Immediately following a feeding. (Unless it’s upright on your chest as you are slightly reclined. This is a great option... esp for reflux babies.)
❌While sleeping. Back is best for sleeping until baby can purposely roll. If baby falls asleep during tummy time, please roll her to her back.
-
What have you tried to make tummy time a more fun activity for your little one? Will you tag me in your stories today if you found ways to help your little one enjoy it?

B A B Y W E A R I N G !
True or False? Healthy sleep habits and babywearing can co-exist?!?!
It’s TRUE!!!!
You can ABSOLUTELY still babywear with ALL of the Taking Cara Babies courses and resources.
-
Babywearing doesn’t have to be seen as a “bad habit” or “sleep crutch!” It can be enjoyed and embraced even while laying healthy sleep habits!
-
Babywearing can be so perfect:
When you’re out and about.
When your older one has summer activities, and you need to sneak a nap in for the younger one.
In the late afternoon when naps become more difficult, and babies tend fight naps (common in those first 5-6 months).
When you want to have your baby close, but you need your arms free.
When you’re traveling, especially in the airport.
-
✳️Of course, you’ll still want to practice naps in the crib too. It’s all about balance, and that’s what our courses teach! ⚖️
Yes, balance really can be achieved in the baby sleep world!
-
Tell me your favorite wrap or babywearing option. What time of day is most helpful to babywear for you? Any babywearing mamas have incredible sleepers? Who knows a babywearing daddy?
-
➡️PS- I know some people don’t love babywearing. That’s ok too! You do you!
