The lengthy paint process has begun on the 1919 Ballot. Between the coats of primer, paint, and lacquer the process will take around 3-4 days. This is due to the hand-brushed application of each coat as well as the drying time between them. Once it’s done, it will be another week before the finish truly sets. Period photographs revealed, among other things, that the intakes on the 1919 Ballot had been shorted at some point to accept different carburetors. To exactly match the car as it was raced in the 1919 Indy 500, we had to extend the intakes to replicate the configuration seen in the photos. This was done in-house by our fabricator, who also matched the “patina” of the original metal by brushing the extension with phosphoric acid and roughing up the surface with a file. #revsinstitute #restoration #fabrication #ballot #indy500 #automotivehistory

The original paint process for the 1919 Ballot wheels, which was common in this period, was to dip them in asphalt-based paint. In order to replicate the process as close as possible with paint available today we dipped the wheels in a vat of paint, let them drip, slowly spun them, and then hung them to dry. The spin step ensured even coverage and stopped any runs from forming in the modern paint formula, which is thinner and more prone to runs than the original asphalt-based paint. #revsinstite #restoration #ballot #automotivehistory #wirewheels
