If you look at this battery it all looks fine and super easy and simple to make!! If you ever tried to make one, you know how much dramas it comes to build a battery in this configuration and orientation (very time consuming): •18650 cells don’t join together end-to-end like AA or AAA batteries, you have to make 5 separate blocks and spot weld them together side by side, then fold the nickel tabs so it “looks like” they’re joined end to end. •Pack shape vs series and parallels: you may find that you odd parallel group where some cells are in one block and some continue on the next block, you’ll have to solder a few wires outside the pack to get the right number of cells. •Need to add a good insulation between cell blocks (when you fold together you have different cell voltage terminals facing each other. In this case it has a layer of fibreglass sheet insulating between blocks. •Structurally weak: standard cell holders don’t interlock front to front to each other, this is why you see a super strong fibreglass tape holding the blocks together. Ideally we would’ve used custom cell holders designed to interlock in this orientation and configuration. This pack was wrapped in PVC shrink what increases the rigidity of the pack. Consider a plastic or metal battery case to stop from any flexing under impact. •Wiring battery management system, it all needs to be planned before you start building the pack. If you leave for later, chances are the wires won’t fit between the blocks or may make the pack not 100% straight or crushing some wires. Lesson learned? Keep the battery pack as simple as possible, all in one single brick, it’s more reliable too.
