I would like to introduce you all to this beautiful nurse that I just found out about today thanks to @mrchinnn_ . Her name is Andrea and her IG name is @theseatednurse ! Andrea has completed nursing school, passed boards, and been a registered nurse for a year now! During this 1st year, Andrea has gone on over 50 interviews and has been turned down every time due to her disability. Andrea has been checked off on every skill that any other new nurse has been checked off on, yet she constantly has to prove her capabilities regardless of her credentials. While I do understand that she may have certain limitations that may hinder her from working in some areas of nursing, there is no reason why she should be turned away like she has been! Nursing is labor intensive, however, in environments like the hospital, nurses work as a TEAM! I'm sitting here thinking "what are major things that I can do that Andrea can't do?" Two things I come up with are CPR, and helping with patients mobility (lifting, ambulation with equipment). I know SEVERAL nurses personally that are in codes all the time and never engage in the active portion of CPR, as that is not the only role! When it comes to moving patients, there are lifts and a team of other nurses who would work on the same unit. I will hop off my soap box and say this, discrimination is NEVER okay. We have to find a way to accommodate the needs of those with any type of disability when we can. Andrea did not choose to be in a wheelchair...but she did choose to become a nurse and save lives!
