“What does a toner do?” First off, a toner is a SERVICE. Not a PRODUCT. And these two usually get mixed up. Whether it’s called a toner, a glaze, an overlay or a gloss... they’re all the same thing. toning can be achieve with demi permanent, semi permanent, permanent colour, pigmented shampoos, etc.
A toner is a word that stylists use to describe what we are doing during the process to achieve the desired results or to neutralize unwanted tones. After prelightening, they are an important step to close the cuticle and add shine to the hair.
Secondly, hair does not lift ash, beige, platinum, silver, or pastel. But it does lift yellow and orange. And if these are not tones you want to see - you need a toner.
And each toner should be formulated specifically for that client, and the results they are desiring. No two toner formulations will be the same as no two heads of hair are the same. Sometimes, desired results need 2-4 toner formulations.
Toners are also TEMPORARY. Longevity depends on the integrity of the hair, home care routine and proper formulation. More damage = more maintenance.
